Celtic’s 1967 European Cup Final

One of the most iconic evenings in Scottish football came in Lisbon on 25 May 1967 when Celtic beat Inter Milan 2–1 to win the European Cup, the first Scottish and first British club ever to do so. Before their Cup Winners’ Cup triumph, Aberdeen produced another unforgettable European moment by defeating Bayern Munich in the 1982–83 quarter-final. After a goalless first leg in Munich, Aberdeen won the home leg 3–2 in front of a passionate Pittodrie crowd. The win against a team packed with experienced international stars helped set the stage for their eventual run to the final and is celebrated as one of the club’s greatest nights. It emphasised the ambition and resilience that characterised Aberdeen’s memorable European campaign that season.

Rangers’ 1972 European Cup Winners’ Cup Final

Rangers’ most celebrated European night came on 24 May 1972 when they defeated Dynamo Moscow 3–2 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in Barcelona. Rangers struck first, taking a 1-0 lead through Colin Stein in under 25 minutes, before building on their lead by a goal from William Johnston just before halftime. The Scottish side showed no signs of slowing down, scoring a 3rd before the 50th-minute mark, which would look to seal their first and only major European trophy. Dynamo Moscow would come back to score 2 goals by the 87th minute, but it was too little too late by that point, as Rangers were able to see the game through to claim the title. It firmly established Rangers on the international stage and gave Scottish football one of its proudest European achievements.
