Rangers Beat Celtic With No Fans: Five Other Famous Fanless Victories

Rangers’ 1-0 win over Celtic at Parkhead on September 20, 2026 was an unusual Old Firm derby. No supporters were allowed inside, following the Scottish FA’s disciplinary decision after disorder at the clubs’ March Scottish Cup meeting. Ryan Naderi scored the only goal, while Rangers recorded their second victory over Celtic in a week after a 3-0 League Cup win at Ibrox.

Derek McInnes said the empty stadium created a “different set of circumstances” and praised his players for handling them. McInnes noted Celtic had managed two shots on target across the two recent meetings. Gers made it back-to-back Old Firm victories in a week, thanks to a first-half strike from Ryan Naderi, and the manager praised how his squad dealt with the challenge and the environment at Parkhead. Naderi said he wished the fans had been there, but felt the team had shown it could perform away without them.

    West Ham 5-1 Castilla, 1980

One famous empty-stadium win came in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. West Ham hosted Real Madrid’s reserve side, Castilla, in the second leg of their first-round tie in 1980. UEFA had ordered the match to be played without spectators after trouble during the first leg in Madrid. Only 262 people, mainly staff and media, were officially present.

West Ham won 5-1 after extra time. Geoff Pike, David Cross and Paul Goddard put the hosts in control before Castilla pulled one back, forcing the tie beyond 90 minutes. Cross scored twice more in extra time to settle the contest. The match became known as the “Ghost Game”.

    Tecos 2-1 Club América, 2009

Mexico’s H1N1 outbreak forced several top-flight matches behind closed doors in 2009. Tecos faced América at the enormous Estadio Azteca, but the stadium was empty because of public-health restrictions.

Tecos won 2-1, with Carlos Adrián Morales and Mario Ortiz scoring for the visitors. Robert de Pinho replied for América.

    Fenerbahçe 1-0 BATE Borisov, 2013

Fenerbahçe’s Europa League tie with BATE Borisov was played behind closed doors after UEFA sanctioned the Turkish club for crowd trouble. Supporters were excluded, although the empty stands did not mean total silence: flares were fired into the stadium from outside during the match.

Fenerbahçe found a way through, winning 1-0. Cristian Baroni scored the decisive penalty in Istanbul, sending the Turkish side into the last 16.

    Barcelona 3-0 Las Palmas, 2017

Barcelona’s home game against Las Palmas in October 2017 was moved behind closed doors amid unrest in Catalonia. The conditions did not prevent a clear victory.

The match was played at Camp Nou without the usual crowd, making the celebrations unusually subdued. Sergio Busquets opened the scoring, Lionel Messi made it 2-0 and Andrés Iniesta completed the 3-0 win. Messi is still scoring, only now in the MLS at Inter Miami. His team are often odds-on to win their matches on sites like NetBet, which offers casino games as well as sports betting. The platform includes responsible gambling tools; Italian fans will find these on the Gioco Responsabile page.

    Netherlands 4-0 Cyprus, 1987

The Netherlands recorded a comfortable victory in an empty stadium when Cyprus returned to Amsterdam for a Euro 1988 qualifying replay. The original meeting had ended 8-0 to the Dutch but was declared void after a bomb was thrown onto the pitch.

The replay was played at De Meer Stadium in front of around 300 staff and media. John Bosman scored a hat-trick and Ronald Koeman added the other goal as the Netherlands won 4-0.

So in short, Rangers’s derby win joins a varied list of matches in which teams had to perform without their normal crowds. But for Gers fans, that won’t make it less special.
