There have been some massive changes going on in the teams of the Scottish Premier League this season. We’ve seen some huge change ups with multiple players being brought in to try and up everyone’s game.

We’re going to look through a bit of backstory on the Scottish Premier League as well as looking at some of the key players. We’ll be looking through who has switched over to what teams and who we think can bring certain teams back from the brink.

History of Scottish Premier League

The Scottish Premier League was formed back in 1998 as it branched off from the Scottish Football League. It might seem like there isn’t too much to differentiate the two, and that’s mainly because the two leagues were eventually reunited in 2013.

So, we now only have the one Scottish Premier League and it happens every year between August and May of the following year. This season is between Sat, 5 Aug 2023 – Sun, 19 May 2024.

There have always been two divisions in the Scottish Premier League - Division One and Division Two. Much like any other form of football league, Division One is at the top and represents the best of the league. And Division Two is the level that teams want to do their best to avoid.

There are 12 teams in the league, all of them competing to win that top spot. Last year, it was Celtic who were crowned the winners. But this didn’t come as much of a surprise as they’ve won the title 53 times already.

But judging by some of the player change ups there have been this year, could their reign be in jeopardy?

Newest players in Scottish Premier League

Tom Lawrence might just be the Scottish Premier League’s answer to its current midfielder problem. This has been a visible issue for the Scottish Premier League for a little while now and before Lawrence, it seemed like it might go on forever.

Thankfully, Lawrence has come along just at the right time. Goals from the midfield range have been few and far between but Lawrence looks as though he might be able to pick up the slack.

His move over to the Rangers can only benefit everyone involved. He’s looking to up their game with his abilities when he gets in that box placement.

Another one to watch this season is Jordy Hiwula. Ross County have just purchased him from Doncaster and he looks as though he could be a key player for them this season.

He’s already bagged himself three goals in the League Cup campaign and this looks like it could be a trend that continues. At 28, he’s only just reaching his full potential which means we could be seeing a lot more of it in the championships to come.

Considine has just made the move from Aberdeen to St Johnstone to try and drag them out of the ever terrifying drop zone. St Johnstone haven’t been having the best run recently so Considine has quite the job on his hands.

But with his track record, we have high hopes for his capacity to bring St Johnstone back from the brink. This experienced player has surprised everyone before, and there’s no doubt he can do it again. As long as he manages to stay injury free, it looks like he’s going to have a great season.

Livingston have lots of good players in their ranks this season but one person who is high on the list is Esmael Goncalves. He was previously at Hearts and St Mirren so he has lots of experience in dealing with the pressure of the Scottish Premiership.

Livingston’s main goal this season is…well, goals. They have been slacking in this area recently and have been relying too heavily on Bruce Anderson to bring home the bacon.

This is partially down to the loss of Alan Forrest but it doesn’t do well to dwell on who’s been lost. We’re hoping that with Goncalves on side, they can manage to bring home some more goals and have a much more successful season.
