Is the Premier League title race between Manchester United and Liverpool now?

Going based on the current Premier League table, Manchester United and Liverpool might be considered to be the favourites to win the 20/21 edition of the competition, but the bookmakers currently have Man City as the favorites and are best priced at 8/11, with Liverpool at 3/1, and Man United at 7/1.

Man City are currently four points behind, but with a game in hand, a win would take them two points above Liverpool and just 1 point behind currently leaders, Man United.

Manchester United

Indeed, Manchester United have managed to shoot themselves into contention as title contenders and have managed to do it in a way which appears to have happened quietly. There has been a lot of criticism thrown at the Red Devils over the last few years, whilst Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been perceived by many as not being good enough to lead the team as a manager and obtain silverware.

However, the ‘baby-faced assassin’ as he was once-known during his playing days, has been able to guide his team to the top of the table, despite continuing to have his critics. Whilst it might be true that the Red Devils have not been at their best, they currently sit top of the table and clear of Liverpool in second.

Naturally, Bruno Fernandes has been the talisman for Manchester United and it would be hard to argue that they are even able to be considered in a Premier League title race if it were not for the Portuguese superstar. Since arriving at Old Trafford, Fernandes has managed to have a goal contribution of 44 in his 48 games played; scoring a total of 27 and providing a further 17 assists. Admittedly, there have been a number of penalties in that total but they still need to be scored when awarded.

There could be an argument that other key players could look to step-up and produce better performances, such as Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, for example, but things are currently going well for those at Old Trafford.

Liverpool

For all their injury issues, Liverpool still remain near the summit of the Premier League table and it would not be a surprise to remain there for the duration of the Premier League season. Jurgen Klopp has lost key players such as Virgil van Dijk, Thiago Alcantara, Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez throughout periods of the campaign, but the Reds have continued to keep things going.

Inconsistency might not be a word that can be used to describe Liverpool in a usual season, but the 2020/21 Premier League campaign is far from normal. The Anfield outfit have been battered 7-2 by Aston Villa away from home in the Premier League, however they have since recorded a 7-0 victory at Selhurst Park against a decent Crystal Palace side who have been performing well. Then again, they have dropped points to West Bromwich Albion, Newcastle United and Southampton in recent fixtures which saw them leapfrogged in the Premier League.

The likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Fabinho have all put in solid displays, but again, the theme of consistency appears to have had an effect on those at Anfield. If they can return to their best, though, they will give Manchester United a run for their money.

Other teams such as Manchester City and Leicester City involved

It would be wrong to suggest the race for the Premier League title is a two-horse race, though, with teams like Manchester City and Leicester City remaining in the hunt, whilst Tottenham Hotspur could be considered another contender. The likes of Everton, Southampton, Aston Villa and even Chelsea will probably find it difficult to keep up the pace going based on the form they have displayed.

Pep Guardiola’s side have had a difficult start to the 2020/21 Premier League season, however four wins in their last four matches has seen them shoot up the table and into third. They sit just four points behind city rivals, Manchester United, but still have an extra game to play.

If they continue their current form and replicate the kind of performances they managed against Chelsea, the Citizens would have to be considered a genuine title challenger this season.

Furthermore, Leicester City do not appear to be showing any signs of slowing down their own title challenge, as they have managed to take points from fellow title challengers and have managed to grid out the results that they need. Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes are unbeaten in their last four and look to be in the mix at this stage of the season.

There is still plenty of football left to be played in this Premier League season, and with so many teams still in the hunt, the tite might not even be won by either Manchester United or Liverpool.
