Betting offers shorten odds as Celtic chase the pack

The big chat before the start of the season was whether Steven Gerrard's Rangers could mount a significant title challenge, as the blue side of Glasgow look to break Celtic's decade of dominance over the Scottish league.

Four games in, Gerrard's side are sitting pretty at the top, level on points with Hibs, just edging the Edinburgh side on goal difference.

Since the start of the season it's all gone to pot for Celtic. They have become embroiled in a scandal that saw a postponement to their two most recent fixtures against St Mirren and Aberdeen.

It's left the Parkhead side wallowing in sixth place and chasing the pack with six points to make up should they want to get back in the mix. It certainly improves Rangers chances at a title challenge, and with a range of betting offers currently available the odds have shortened on Gerrard's side to win the league this season.

Points reduction in the mix

It's not surprising that the bookmakers still hold Celtic as favourites to defend their title. It will take more than one bump in the road to derail such an experienced side with Neil Lennon at the helm.

But questions have arisen over a potential points reduction that, if it comes to fruition, could see Celtic have to make up even more ground in their charge towards the top. Celtic will hope to get their season back on track in resounding fashion away to Dundee on Saturday afternoon.

Rangers search for added firepower

The rumour mill has well and truly been circling Ibrox over the summer. The talk of the town is that star striker Alfredo Morelos is looking for a move away from the Scottish Premiership.

Morelos has been Rangers main goalscorer since arriving from HJK Helsinki back in 2017 and with Jermain Defoe out with a hamstring complaint, it leaves boss Gerrard lacking in the firepower department.

With an October deadline to the transfer window on the distant horizon it gives the Gers ample time to make an adequate replacement should a deal for Morelos be sealed early on. It just begs the question that if a transition is necessary, how far it will come to affect their title push in the meantime.

The winner outside of Glasgow

It's no secret that the Glasgow sides have had an iron grip on the Scottish top flight for time immemorial, but there's still value in the market to be had outside of the top two.

A bet on a Premiership winner outside of Celtic and Rangers gets much better value in the odds market on some teams, especially so early in the season.

Last season's seventh placed finishers Hibs are currently joint-top on points with Rangers and has seen a boost to the odds on them to finish in third spot behind a likely Celtic-Rangers/Rangers-Celtic top two finish.

Aberdeen, embroiled in scandal akin to Celtic that saw two of their matches postponed, are current favourites in this market alongside Hibs. Both are currently priced at 6/4 with a number of online betting sites.

Last year's third place finishers Motherwell are currently priced at 13/1 following a disappointing start to the season that's failed to see them register a single victory as of yet.
