Young Scottish Starlets to keep your eye on this season

Given the recent struggles of the national team you’d be forgiven for thinking that there’s a big shortage of young Scottish talent at the moment.

However, that’s not the case at all; in fact, there are a plethora of young stars breaking through that are making their mark on leagues all across the world.

In this article we’ll look at a selection of young Scotsman to keep an eye on this season and beyond.

John McGinn

Signed from Hibs for what now looks like an absolute bargain at £2.5m, John McGinn has made a serious impression south of the border since his move to Aston Villa.

The all-action midfielder scored the winning goal in last season’s play-off final to take the Midlands club back to the promise land of the Premier League and even after just one solitary appearance in the EPL, ‘McGinniesta’ (as he is affectionately referred to amongst the Villa faithful) has already made his mark.

Although his Villa side eventually went down 3-1 away at Spurs on the opening day fixture, McGinn scored a fine goal; latching on to a perfectly timed through ball before retaining his composure to slot home.

If Villa are to remain in the EPL this season, then a lot could rest on the form of McGinn. Given the fact he likes to break forward, as demonstrated by his goal at Spurs, he’s likely to be touted as a possible goalscorer in many Villa football tips and predictions this season.

Scott McKenna

Defender Scott McKenna has attracted plenty of admirers over the last few seasons, and rightly so.

The commanding defender turned out 30 times for Aberdeen in the league last term as well as featuring twice in the Europa League.

Still only 22, which is no age for a defender, there’s room for McKenna to grow and develop even further and this season will be massive for the 6ft+ stopper.

He will no doubt be an integral part of the Scottish national team as they strive to turn around their Euro qualification fortunes and if he can continue his fine form for Aberdeen then it won’t be long before bigger clubs start seriously battling it out for his signature.

Greg Taylor

Although it seems as though the defensive midfielder has been around for an eternity, Taylor is still only 21 and after another strong campaign for Kilmarnock last season his stock is rising and he is attracting plenty of admirers, particularly in England.

Since he first made his debut in the 2015/16 season, Taylor has made over 100 appearances for Kili, which is a lot of games for such a young player.

Provided he stays injury free it could be a very big season for Taylor if his game continues to develop so it will be very interesting to see how he performs this campaign.
