Bookies doubt Gerrard’s chances of guiding Rangers to Scottish Premiership title

Rangers have moved closer year on year to rivalling Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title again, but the 2019/20 campaign is likely going to be another year of misery at Ibrox, going by the latest odds shared by Oddschecker.

Steven Gerrard’s side are currently best-priced as 5/2 outsiders to lift the famous trophy in a year's time, a market that you can get betfred promo codes for, which would see the wait for a 55th crown stretch close to a decade since the Gers’ last triumph over bitter Glasgow rivals Celtic.

It is the Hoops, meanwhile, who are the natural favourites for the title, with Neil Lennon’s squad currently staked at 4/11, having clinched their 50th top-flight honour with a nine-point margin in the recently concluded term.

Odds on Gerrard’s first success as a manager, though, are a vast improvement to where they sat a year ago.

Oddschecker initially placed the Gers as 9/1 underdogs ahead of the 2018/19 season, before slashing prices on the Ibrox natives’ chances of a 55th Premiership title to 5/1, after the former Liverpool captain took four points in his first two league games in charge.

Gerrard is not only more in favour with the bookies in 2019, but Rangers are also very much in with the punters, with 65% of bets on who will lift the Premiership title placed in favour of the Gers, while just 22% are backing defending-champions Celtic.

The Hoops still have a greater market share than the other ten sides combined, however, with Aberdeen third-favourites with the bookies and punters at 25/1, while Kilmarnock have been backed 2% of the time at 200/1.

Hamilton, Ross County and St Mirren are currently the biggest outsiders, meanwhile, with the trio best-priced at 4500/1, while Livingston can be backed at 2000/1.

As for the Scottish League Cup, again Rangers find themselves playing the role of the outsider in the betting stakes, with the Gers currently the 7/2 underdogs to lift the cup, while Celtic edge their Ibrox neighbours at 5/4 and Aberdeen again run in third, this time at 14/1.

Like with the bookies, Gerrard’s men are also out of favour with punters when it comes to the League Cup, with 29.59% of all bets placed going in favour of Celtic, compared to 23.47% backing the Ibrox natives – a larger margin than what separates Rangers to Aberdeen.

The biggest underdogs, meanwhile, are Cowdenbeath, Annan and Clyde, who are all staked at 500/1.
