Popular football accumulators explained

Every weekend during the football season, millions of pounds is staked by doe-eyed punters hoping to cash in on their predictions and forecasts. Indeed, The Mirror report that gambling firms continue to make record-breaking profits.

This can partly be attributed to their increased level of accessibility, with the development of gambling apps and such like.

The most popular method is the accumulator bet, due to its low stake requirement in exchange for potentially huge returns. These are also quick and easy to create on apps, where all the latest odds, stats, and even pundits predictions can be found.

However, there are a large variety of accumulators on offer, from both teams to score, to over 2.5 goals. With that in mind, this article explains the ins and outs of these favoured bets, and how to place them using an online app.

Team to win

This is the most basic and self-explanatory type of accumulator, as you are simply required to scroll down the list of fixtures and select the outcome of the fixtures - either a home win, a draw, or an away win.

Of course, which games make it onto your betslip are up to you, so it’s always best to leave out the ones which you’re unsure about.

The potential winnings will depend on how many selections you’ve made, and the combined odds set by the bookies at the time. For example, a £5 stake on an 8-fold (that’s a slip containing 8 forecasts) with odds of 250/1 would return a total of £1,255.

Both teams to score

If you’re expecting a goal-fest around the grounds, then these are excellent bets, and keep you interested right up until the final whistle.

This type of accumulator simply requires you to select games in which you think both teams will score - the full-time result is irrelevant, provided both teams have scored at least one goal in the match.

Alternatively, you can opt to select ‘no’ on your betslip if you think that only one team will score, or you can see a goalless draw on the horizon.

Win and BTTS

These bets have become more popular in recent seasons, due to the fact that just three or four selections can provide big winnings off a relatively small stake.

These bets require you to select the winner of games in which both teams score. For example, if you have selected Manchester City to win and both teams to score against Chelsea, Manchester City must win the game within 90 minutes, but Chelsea must also score at least once.

In most cases, all selections must be correct for your bet to win. Occasionally, bookmakers will return your original stake as a free bet if you are let down by one result.

Over 2.5 goals

Similar in nature to the BTTS format, these are great bets if you’re anticipating a lot of goals. The wording of this bet type can sometimes be confusing for punters, as of course there is no such thing as half a goal. However, this simply means that a minimum of three goals must be scored in the game for that particular leg to be won.
