Premiership
A busy Saturday in the top flight saw plenty of drama, even with Glasgow's big two sitting this round out. The story of the day unfolded in Paisley, where Dundee United delivered a ruthless away display to thump St Mirren 0-3. That result pulls United up into the mid-table pack on eight points and condemns the Buddies to their third consecutive defeat. Despite their slide, St Mirren stay fifth on ten points, but they are now level with their cross-Tayside rivals Dundee, who edged out Motherwell 2-1 at Dens Park. The Dark Blues climb to fourth, while the Steelmen's miserable run stretches to three straight league losses, leaving them ninth on eight points.
Elsewhere, it was all honours even. Hearts had the chance to keep the pressure firmly on league leaders Celtic, but were held to a 1-1 draw away to bottom-of-the-table Kilmarnock. The Jambos sit second on 13 points, five points adrift of the leaders having played a game more, while Killie remain rooted to twelfth with five points. In the capital, Hibernian and Aberdeen played out a 1-1 stalemate at Easter Road. The result extends Hibs' winless run to four matches, leaving them languishing in tenth place on seven points, just a point behind seventh-placed Aberdeen. Over in Perth, St Johnstone and Falkirk also shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. The Bairns stay eleventh on six points, still searching for traction, while Saints sit sixth on eight points. The league now pauses for a brief respite before returning on October 10th, featuring mouth-watering clashes like Motherwell hosting Celtic and Hearts entertaining St Mirren.
Championship
The fairytale start for newly-promoted Stenhousemuir shows no signs of slowing down. The Warriors marched to their sixth consecutive victory with a gritty 1-0 home win over Arbroath, extending their unbeaten run to seven games and opening up a commanding five-point lead at the summit on 19 points. Second-placed Raith Rovers couldn't keep pace as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Firhill by third-placed Partick Thistle, keeping the Kirkcaldy outfit on 14 points and the Jags two points behind on 12.
Dunfermline joined Thistle on 12 points after picking up a solid 0-1 away victory against beleaguered Greenock Morton. The Pars are now four games unbeaten, while the Ton's nightmare campaign worsens with a third straight defeat, leaving them seven games without a win and rooted to the bottom with just a solitary point. On Friday night, Ayr United grabbed an important 0-2 win on the road at Queen's Park to leapfrog into sixth place on eight points, leaving the Spiders in ninth. Meanwhile, Livingston and Inverness CT played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in West Lothian, keeping Livi fifth on ten points and Caley Thistle eighth on seven. Round eight arrives swiftly on September 25th, headlined by Ayr United hosting league leaders Stenhousemuir.
League One
The title fight in League One is developing into an absolute slugfest between two rampant full-time outfits. Ross County maintain top spot on goal difference following a professional 0-2 win at Cove Rangers, making it seven games unbeaten. Breathing down their necks are Hamilton, who brushed aside Queen of the South with a resounding 4-1 triumph at New Douglas Park. Both the Staggies and Accies sit locked on 19 points with identical six-win records, having conceded just five goals between them all season.
Keeping up the chase in third are Montrose, who made it five wins on the bounce with a hard-fought 1-2 away victory against East Fife. The Gable Endies sit on 15 points, two clear of fourth-placed East Kilbride, who recorded a valuable 1-2 away win over Alloa Athletic. The Wasps have now gone four games without a win, sliding to fifth on nine points. Airdrieonians climbed to sixth, also on nine points, after claiming a 1-2 win at Balmoor against Peterhead, inflicting a third straight defeat on the Blue Toon. Down at the foot of the table, Queen of the South remain tenth on four points, just behind Cove Rangers on five. Action resumes on October 3rd, with high-flying Montrose travelling to face Airdrieonians.
League Two
League Two continues to deliver goals and drama at every turn. Stranraer were the weekend's headline act, dismantling Elgin City in a stunning 1-5 rout at Borough Briggs. That makes it four consecutive wins and six games unbeaten for the Blues, who move into second place on 16 points. Elgin City, meanwhile, suffer a third straight loss, sliding to fourth on 11 points. League leaders Clyde preserved their top spot and six-game unbeaten run, but had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw away to bottom-placed Stirling Albion. The Bully Wee lead the division on 17 points, while the Binos remain seven games without a victory at the foot of the table on five points.
Third-placed Spartans suffered a bump in the road as they were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Dumbarton at the Rock, allowing the Sons to pull level on nine points with three other sides. One of those is Edinburgh City, who produced an impressive display to win 1-3 away at Kelty Hearts. Rounding out the weekend's action, Forfar Athletic secured a vital 1-0 home win over Annan Athletic to climb into fifth place on 11 points. The division returns on October 3rd, featuring a heavyweight clash as Stranraer host Edinburgh City and Clyde travel to take on Elgin City.
