I don't understand the maul anymore.

In the past, you needed a least one player from each team bound onto the ball carrier with the ball off the ground for a maul to be formed. Then every other player had to join from the hindmost foot and drive through the middle.

Despite there being no changes in those laws, it seems you can come from just about anywhere as long as the ref doesn't see you change your bind. It also seems that they let teams form a maul with no contact from an opponent after a lineout, and invent offside lines that don't actually exist in law.
