monkeyblair
Must be honest, really don't fancy a turbo trainer either and am determined to keep going out during the winter, unless the weather is really bad . TBH I dont mind the cold or rain that much,as lng as it's not too windy No doubt,Monkeyblair will bide his time on this and remind us how nice and warm he was in his garage,on his turbo trainer, watching cable porn, while we were out freezing our nads off! got to agree with this. i take my bike to work in all weathers and cold, rain or even snow don't bother you once you're moving, it's the wind blowing against you that's the worst. loads of effort and you feel like you're getting nowhere. everytime i read this thread, i want to buy new stuff for my bike My real issue is that I have a job I cannot cycle to as I am out seeing clients all day and soon I will be driving to work in the dark and coming home in the dark. I don't really fancy then going out cycling on the roads with lights which, whilst they are good, let's face it they are not the best for seeing far into the distance. At the weekends I have 3 kids, a wife and a dog I like to spend time with and also play golf so fitting in a 2 hour cycle into that is highly unlikely. Here is a challenge....... Why don't we keep a record for November as to what time you have spent on your bike and let's see who does more, I know it will be me......
gingapar
for getting to uni this year, i've decided to do the first leg of my trip (ie to the train station) by cycling. this is approximately 5 miles (worked out two different routes on map my run that both came in under that) with a fair mix of inclines and declines and it is mostly road/path with only a small amount of well walked trail. At present though, only have a bmx (a silly £99 clinging to my youth purchase a couple of years ago) which is completely inadequate for the purpose (and as i'm 6 foot 2, on it, i basically look like i've robbed a child) so it's time for a new bike. I'm hoping to use this (still in good condition) bike as part exchange and really don't have more than £100 to spend in total. All i want is fairly reliable, a comfortable ride and decent speed retention when rolling on flat ground. any recommendations?

It wasn't a criticism MB and I'm sure you'll spend more time on your bike than me in November. I'll also be driving to and from work in the dark, have a wife & two sons and also spend quite a bit of time away from home with my job. However ,the thought of knocking my pan in on a turbo trainer in my garage just doesn't appeal to me and I know I'll probably only get out once or maybe twice at the weekend in the winter if I'm lucky. You should take comfort in the fact that with all the training you'll be doing over winter, you'll get fitter and stronger and then maybe be able to keep up with Drooper and me
Unleash The Nade
A question for folk cleverer than me..... I have a turbo trainer for my bike and know that last night I pedalled for 40 minutes at a rate of 2 revolutions of the pedals per second making it that my pedals went round 4,800 times. I want to know what distance I covered, what other information do you need to know? I would say about 3 miles

monkeyblair
Good luck to everyone doing the Pedal For Scotland cycle tomorrow. I am limbering up with a home made curry, some Magners and I have half an arctic roll in the freezer for later. Hope the portaloos are good...

monkeyblair
you'll probably be better served by pulling a Radcliffe. Will leave that to the runners (excuse the pun).
monkeyblair
Just finished the 51 miles in 3 hours 6 minutes and I feel brilliant. Averaged 16.3mph including all the stopping and starting getting out of Glasgow. Did a bit of last minute sponsorship requests and managed to raise £510 so far. Definately a cycle anyone should do if you are keen.

Glad the weather stayed dry and you had a decent tail wind. realy want to do this next year and like you, might try and build up for the 100 mile one I went out this morning and did 22 miles. The first 13 were mainly all uphill and into the wind and it's by far the toughest one I've done so far

gingapar
cycling in the rain is a million times more enjoyable than in the sun so long as you have adequate waterproofs! as has been said, the wind is nothing short of a c**t

monkeyblair
I have been a bit lazy having been on holiday and yet to get back in the saddle Registered for the 100 mile sportive ride in the Pedal for Scotland for next year so some serious training required!
budmiester1
I am heading up to Lochgilphead at the weekend to cycle the Crinan Canal towpath and surrounding areas. As I have my own bike I thought I would try and fit it into the back of the car and guess what ? it doesn't fit as it used to in my old Focus. So I am now £95 lighter for a bike carrier I was thinking of getting one anyway but not right now .Ahh well just have to make sure I use it.

endieinreekie
Went out for a cycle on Saturday morning for the first time in years. Really enjoyed it, went along the prom at porty, along the coast through Musselburgh, past the race course and headed out towards prestonpans. Turned back before reaching there as I realised I would have to come all the way back. Came back along the john muir path to Musselburgh which was nice. Not sure how far all that was, but it was a lovely morning and I really enjoyed it.
Desert Nomad
Was back to work today after a cracking cycle-touring holiday round Orkney. It really is made for cycle-touring, pretty flat & quiet roads for the most part. Gotta watch out for the wind though, 1st day I cycled up from St Margaret`s Hope to Kirkwall straight into a force 7 northerly gale, not wise!
