I would suggest you seriously consider a new saddle.

I looked at buying one of these, tried one and really found it made little difference.

A mate of mine who's friend is a doctor, says its probably the most important piece of kit you can invest in as a male cyclist,as wrong saddle can lead to prostrate trouble and erectile problems huh.gif

This is quite a good article on bike seats.

I will need to think about mine as everytime I get to about 15 miles my right buttock / gonad area gerts a bit sore..

Cant remember the brand, but I paid £40 for a new saddle out of Dales in Glasow and its brilliant.

I used to get numbness around the same area, but nothing since.

Well worth the investment

When you can, have a look at which one it is and let me know, cheers.

Turbo trainer just arrived from Ireland today - £112 with free postage which is at least £35 better than anywhere else i saw:-

I have only been cycling for 6 weeks now so am no expert.

Turbo trainer has been bought to make sure I continue during the winter otherwise just like my golf the bike would be put away and forgotten about until spring.

I have cleared the garage and put in a spare tv and hi-fi in readiness for it!! Means I have no excuse when the wee one goes to bed and it is already dark, an hour or so in the garage watching Eastenders - magic!

Did it make much of a difference?

I was thinking about this...

Although Im not sure if thats overkill or not.

Makes a huge difference and stops the chance of you cock falling off when you're older!.

seriously though,since I canged,I've never had any discomfort /pins & needles,even of a 50 plus mile ride I did on Monday.

The thing you're consdering looks like it would't be out of place in a gynaecology clinic and at $109 is a bit steep.

Like I said,I paid £40 at Dales for mine just over a week ago and available at £27.99.

Its slightly wide, which is great for my big arse, but comfortable as hell

I like your style UTN!!!

Just got home to be confronted with my turbo trainer, the assembly of which would keep Einstein busy for weeks.

It is now in the garage next to the golf clubs!!

Will get bac to it when I get more patience.

These are very similar to the shoes I have (shimano mountain bike shoes) and you push the front of your foot down into the pedal then the back and it clicks in - I think that is what ski boots do. To get out of them (which you must remember to do when you come to a junction!!) you just twist your foot outwards and out they pop. These shoes are a bit different to the proper racing shoes as they actually have rubber soles and you can walk about on them without feeling the metal clip that is at the front.

You will see the proper cyclists walking about like fannies on their shoes as they have no grips and are smooth soled.

Took the plunge and bought a pair of SPD pedals and Specialized shoes this afternoon.

Have fitted them and been out for a wee practice.

Going to take a wee while to get used to them, but can feel they'll make a difference .

Was away at 7.15 this morning and did 18 miles !

Think I'm turning into a bit of a cycling addict huh.gif

Good stuff. Just remember to anticipate when you might have to slow down and stop. I've been using Spuds for years now, and still get caught out from time to time :(

On saddles, I'm not at all convinced by these gel-filled cushioned affairs. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they can actually be more damaging to the danglies.

I can't fault WTB Pure saddles:

WTB Pure V Race

It seems they are classed as MTB saddles, but I use one for commuting, and find it does the job very well.

The best bet is to try before you buy. Go into a big bike store like Dales and explain that you're looking to try out various saddles. You'll never get a proper sense of how it will feel on the road/trail, but it is far better than going by a picture on the net.

Im afraid that the sad fact is the vast majority of road-using cyclists are arrogant arseholes who have no regard for other road users or the rules of the road, the decent ones amongst you are likely to take some stick in the crossfire.

its a shame youve encountered such awful people as you seem to be citizen of the year.

Had to go back and find this post as I now cannot believe that you recorded this speed!!

I clocked 36mph the other day and shat it going downhill, to do 56mph I think is unrealistic.

happens all the time in pro cycling, just needs a long hill, some weight helps, bike skills and bottle

Was out yesterday and did 15 milkes using my SPD's.

Can't believe the difference they make and reckon it easily boosts average speed by 3-4 mph.

Also never fell off once, but still plenty time for that!

Glad you are finding them useful.

Used the turbo trainer in the garage on Monday night and have never sweated so much in my life!!

Great purchase and can't recommend it enough.

Did another full pelt 15 miles tonight in 50 minutes.

Spuds are brilliant and also fitted new ergonomic handle grips, as was getting pins & needles with the others.

Have decided not to buy any more accessories for a while,as they'll soon be worth more than the feckin bike !

When I bought my 'proper' mountain bike, I started to pimp it within a few months. It started with the saddle and pedals, but soon it was the cranks and forks etc. I decided to calm it down a bit when my wife pointed out - with some justification - that, based on the mileage I had covered on the bike against the money invested, I'd have been cheaper flying by Concorde

Ah, yes.... bike porn - all the gear and no idea :P

Preparing for the commute home on my steed as I type this. I invested in a set of mudguards for the MTB last week given the changing weather. The big test for us budding Armstrongs and Hoys will, as always, be when the weather turns to shit again. The thought of a turbo-trainer depresses me TBH. Pretty much like going to the gym minus the posing wallopers in the free-weight section

Must be honest, really don't fancy a turbo trainer either and am determined to keep going out during the winter, unless the weather is really bad .

TBH I dont mind the cold or rain that much,as lng as it's not too windy

No doubt,Monkeyblair will bide his time on this and remind us how nice and warm he was in his garage,on his turbo trainer, watching cable porn, while we were out freezing our nads off!

got to agree with this. i take my bike to work in all weathers and cold, rain or even snow don't bother you once you're moving, it's the wind blowing against you that's the worst. loads of effort and you feel like you're getting nowhere.

everytime i read this thread, i want to buy new stuff for my bike laugh.gif
