bluetooner
Give in. Health and Education get plenty as it is Please, please tell me you never really said that. We'll make mistakes but saying every mistake will make the country implode or whatever is daft It doesn't take every mistake for that to happen. It only takes 1. Do you not think it is dafter to think it definitely won't happen instead of it might happen? Well since you're in Georgia I'm not surprised. For folk that still pay their taxes here though, things are looking up. For the first time in my life I have faith in our government and I don't mean Gordon Brown's mob in London. Again, i will ask - what have the SNP done (or the Scottish parliament) that have given you faith that they can run the country properly? Why are things looking up for people living in Scotland, more so than people living in England? I must tell my parents this, as they aren't having the easy life that you seem to have. Want more cash, get funding redirected from less worthy causes. Education and Health get plenty. Actually, after looking at the budget, Health gets plenty. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs...7_snpbudget.pdf

Reina
Think of the children! No i'm not taking the piss. Want more cash, get funding redirected from less worthy causes. Education and Health get plenty. Yes, that'll be why none of the kids I teach can take textbooks home to revise from because there's not enough for one each. That's why, last year, some of the subjects in our curriculum had to be dropped because the council couldn't give us any funding to keep teachers on. That's why Aberdeen City Council are closing schools left right and centre and they're having to make teachers redundant. That's why our school building is crumbling. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

lichtgilphead
Bloody hell. Let's get rid of MORI and all the government think tanks, all we need is a General Nonsense poll : Would you be saying the same if the P'n'B masses were expressing a desire to return to Westminster rule, Gaz? Or do you only rubbish polls when you disagree with their result? Can you explain why you consider this poll to be less representative than (say) a GMTV poll where people can phone in multiple votes? They are only representative of a small group of people, not the whole country. This is a Scottish football messageboard, the want to be an independant country is generally high due to a high amount of nationalism. If you went onto a tea and scone/bridge messageboard the outcome may well be different. Does that mean one is more representative over the other? No it doesn't. I wouldn't base any arguement on any poll.
Reina
Is that not just Aberdeen Council cutting back all over the shop though? I don't work in Aberdeen City. But you're right, Aberdeen are cutting back everywhere, yes, but education seems to be really suffering. Let's close schools, put the kids to other schools without giving the schools we're sending them to more money for the extra teachers they'll need, class sizes will be at their maximum 33, kids wont have access to visiting specialists etc etc. But hey, your exam results aren't good enough - you must improve attainment... I've jus been looking on Google and there's talk of a four and a half day school week! I've never heard of that before... is it particularly common to do that to cut costs? Reina
Yes - it's to save on McCrone cover/time. Full time teachers are contracted to 35 hours a week (that's a fucking joke too, all teachers I know do a lot more than that) plus training etc. Of the 35 hours, we get approx 3 hours (give or take) of 'McCrone time' - basically this is time for marking, preparation, continuous professional development, admin etc. (3 hours for a week of that, lol ) So the thinking behind closing the school on a Friday lunchtime is that teachers work full time without non-contact periods for the 4 and a half days, then the Friday afternoon would be your McCrone time... Technically we'd be teaching for the same amount of time, but because there would be no teachers with non-contact periods during the school week, they wouldn't need so many teachers in the school. If that makes sense.
Scary Bear
Its ok, people don't have to pay tolls to go over the Forth any more, everything is wonderful. I know it's great, or it will be if I ever actually move back up the road. It's a real shame, we really should spunk more money on health and education. Better still spunk it on lost causes like junkies, alkies and the likes.
shetlandbairn
Yeah, does kinda make sense. I find it amusing they call it McCrone time for some reason... like they couldn't think of a more formal name for it?! "Right, last on the agenda. What are we going to call that extra three hours that we do the marking, planning etc.? Any suggestions? (silence) Ah f**k it, we'll just name it after that guy who did the report. Now, lets go to the pub".
