H Wragg
Why is Cambuslang so prevalent as the final venue??
Jimmy MCcabe
Good spot ,The Evening Times final was held there last year as well, decent enough ground with pub facility- Jamie will know the correct reason though.
cmontheloknow
Good spot ,The Evening Times final was held there last year as well, decent enough ground with pub facility- Jamie will know the correct reason though. There are a couple of influences of the West of Scotland Cup Final venue. Firstly, who is in the final itself? Secondly, who is offering their ground for use? Thirdly, is there a social club facility available (sponsors were Whyte & Mackay for a long time therefore they were able to offer a promotion)? Additionally, is it easily accessible? Cambuslang's Somervell Park is a good arena for watching football - it has a big enclosure and has concrete stepped terracing at one side and one end. The pitch has been a problem at times though but I can't recall any problems with it for the Evening Times Final. Newlandsfield seems to be the ground of choice just now, availability assuming, as it is well served by public transport, has a social club etc... I'm fairly sure we turned down the West FInal in 2002-03 as we anticipated the ground being shut for the season to re-seed the pitch. Our last scheduled league game at home had been April 5th '03. We were top of the table at that point but there was a real chance of us being caught by Neilston particularly. Winning the league meant we played the Evening Times Cup and the ground stayed open. Jimmy MCcabe
Spoke to a keen follower of the Junior game about this he said the social club is a factor as is it's available where many other suitable clubs close their grounds for as Jamie said re-seeding etc.
prov
<SNIP>1996-97: Arthurlie 5 Irvine Meadow XI 0 (at Cambuslang Rangers) <SNIP> 1989-90: Irvine Meadow XI 4 Larkhall Thistle 1 (at Pollok) <SNIP> Is there any particular reason Irvine Meadow have the XI after their name ? Given having XI after a clubs name implies it just 11 players from a squad rather than the strongest 1st team or the reserves/U21s etc.

The sign above the tunnel even drops the 'Irvine' from the name!
