Going to be getting my garden done next month, slabs all replaced etc and beds made round the borders and in a corner which is all currently just a shitty mess. No questions for now really, just introducing myself to this fine thread as I will have many questions specially around plant selection etc as I am totally clueless.

I am thinking about keeping a wee section aside for wildflowers etc for the bees. My "lawn" which is in fact just moss and clover seems to be a haven for bumblebees it is currently teeming with them. Its nice to see.

Best of luck with it Bairny. Gave the lawn another cut tonight it’s been a great mix of weather with the rain and sunshine this week.

Supporting posts are now concreted in to the main retaining wall, with the area behind it filled. Need to finish the wall along the back (under the fence), lay gravel, a patio, and a lawn, and then start on the front! Getting there though.

Quite big. How many bodies did you get in there?

Started tidying the garden for the summer and have a base for a greenhouse built.
Got all the wood from my job for free so haven't spent anything so far! DSC_0390.JPGDSC_0393.JPG

Didn't finish that particular greenhouse and ended up chopping it up and burning it but I've started again. I'm going to post progress reports here for motivation.

Bees, butterflies and birds love a Buddleia

Bees like Cotoneaster

Lavender, Honeysuckle, Alliums and Foxgloves as well.

Bees can see the colour purple clearer than other colours.

Best of luck.

Not me personally but we've hired a company to just turn the dump out the back into a grass area for the wee one to play in and some decking for us. They just started laying the decking today. They estimate they've taken away around 21 tonnes of concrete and the first layer of top soil was around 10. So I reckon I've made the right call not doing it myself. Not done yet but it's coming along nicely:-

The grass is still patchy close up and that monstrosity behind the trampoline needs painted a decent colour (as well as a second coat on the decking) but looking at these pictures it's come on leaps and bounds. It cost a lot of money but I have to admit, seeing the wee one running around out there with the dog makes it worth every penny.

I’ve managed to kill my buddleia.
Imagine that. Killing a fucking buddleia.
These things are nuclear proof.
(roots were flooded I think)
That would do it, otherwise a hardy shrub.

If you didn't know the roots were flooded, it would be difficult to notice, until rot sets in, by then it's too late.

Prune it well and you get a great show every year.

Very glad to see that you've put real grass back down instead of that plastic carpet shite that you have to hoover, and gives nothing for bees to munch on or drainage to keep the water table healthy. Looks great!.

  • 1 month later...

This is what I am working with now. Just finished today. Goes all the way along the back and down the other side, so looking for advice/ideas on what will work well in there...

Up in that top corner I think something quite big. Down the bottom of that bed and at the other side I think I want stuff that will climb to aid privacy as our seating etc will be on that patio.

Along the back bed is where I want to use as a wildflower meadow each summer.

Eta yes I am going to paint the fence IMG-20190816-WA0006.thumb.jpeg.248a8d354f7d4558a93911efa492e97a.jpeg
