Watching the Sheffield shield in melbourne is like an antipodean version of watching queens park only in twice as big a ground, it is very cheap however. Heading back home for the third day at Durham, nailed on to rain.

 That is true. Except you will probably get a bigger crowd at a Queens Park game! We went to the G for one on a school excursion one day and there was hardly anyone there, but it's the same throughout Australia here for Sheffield Shield matches. The Ryobi One-Day Cup or whatever it is called now gets fairly decent crowds but the new Twenty20 cup got pretty big crowds to it here.

yeah I went to the Melbourne derby where Samuels threw his bat at Warne and there was about 45k in. In fairness I was going on weekdays when the shield was on and most people will have work etc

To be fair it's even like that for weekend sessions. It doesn't gather too much interest but will always at least make it onto the sports bulletin on the evening news (here in Melbourne for the Vic Bushrangers anyway) and get a little write-up in the newspapers.

Problem with Shield games in recent years is that there haven't really been too many weekend sessions as games have been withTues starts or Wed Nd how managed 4th day. Seems ACB might be considering 5 day games but first up it should be back to Thurs or Fri start. Also use of drop in wickets no help and sadly Adelaide Oval revamp means more of th.

That's a fair point. Also advertising for it is basically non-existant, but shield games have never been hugely popular pulling in big crowds for as long as I can remember.

So then guys any embarrassing predictions?

I'll go with line-ups I gave on the last page and also a safe bet of England to win in 5 days. Fancy one of the captains to get a ton as well.

Would actually like to see the Aussies win the toss and bat first to see if that helps them make a game of it?

It will be interesting to see if England go for a horses for courses team here. The word is that OT is going to be a raging turner which means Panesar must be in with a good shout if thats the way the England selectors decide to go this time (they havent really been doing it in recent times). Was looking to see if the Aussies had heard anything about the pitch but all I could find was this. And from what they have reported, it sounds like it has been deliberately prepared to turn at fucking right angles

Panesar has a really good record at OT as the pitch turns but it has a bit of bounce as well which generally suits his style. I wonder if they would go for two specialist spinners or whether they will lean on Root again especially if the pitch IS a turner. Root looked reasonably decent actually as a bowler, maybe he can be persisted with and can become a genuine all rounder.

Can't see Tremlett starting all the same. Although the extra bounce would help him and would maybe even make him a major weapon with the new ball. And KP did a fitness test this morning but they won't make a decision until tomorrow morning (he will play) apparently. Maybe Tremlett was just brought in to get him involved again, the selectors do rate him and if he can get a full season bowling this summer, he will be a big bonus on the faster bouncier wickets down under. I dont think the will rush him back....

If Australia can get a decent first innings score up then it will be a decent test match*. I reckon they have to bat first , as I dont think they want to be batting last on a pitch that is already dry and cracking three days before a test starts.

* mainly because their bowlers are decent enough. It has been their fragile top order that has lost them the first two games.
