Apparently Cook's partner is expecting a baby during the 5th test. I'd preferred to try Cook and Burns otherwise you're putting him in with someone without any test pedigree

Not sure that matters. Cook isn't scoring runs anyway, he looks totally lost.

England need a top 3 and 2 pace bowlers who can get up near 90 consistently otherwise they will continue to struggle on tour.

They aren’t likely to get 1 up near 90, never mind 2. They just need their seamers to bowl a strict line and length. More pressing for touring (sub-continent) would be finding 2 or 3 world class spinners to compliment or even lead the attack.

I agree that they need a top 3, one that befits their terrific middle order. I don’t follow the domestic game really at all but there must be young openers at the top of the averages that must be worth a try. Cook, on current form, should be dropped. I wonder if they will drop him now that the series is won.

Top series btw. Loved the 4 Tests so far. It’s one of many fascinating aspects of the game that touring sides are so disadvantaged by the ‘conditions’. India, as top Test side in the world, have pushed England all the way and are a little unlucky to be 3-1 down.

Well, Cook announcing this will be his final test means he won't be dropped. Maybe push jennings to 3, bring in burns at the top and drop Ali or Rashid?
Despite his recent poor form, it's a blow for England as they now need to find 2 openers. Bairstow didn't look interested in playing at 3 so moving Jennings might he worth a try.

So for oval that gives an England XI of cook, burns, jennings, root, bairstow, Stokes, buttler, Curran, Ali/Rashid , Broad and Anderson? Unless you think you want to rest broad or Anderson and bring back a woakes? Or drop jennings as well and bring pope back? Number 3 is still the obvious problem. Of course you could rest others like bairstow meaning pope could come back and play burns

I'd be bringing Bell back.

Cook will still get plenty in the CC, but I think he knew that most top quality test attacks have sussed him out now (fourth stump with a bit of nip, out for 20-odd, thanks for playing) and walked before he was likely to be pushed. Not many 'proper' openers left now apart from Elgar, sign of the times sadly....

Plenty of gushing praise for Cook on the Tuffers and Vaughan show last night, but to be fair it is well deserved. The stats are amazing, this last test will be his 159th consecutive test match for England. Most test runs, most centuries, most 150s and most catches taken for England. He has also scored more runs opening the batting than anyone else.

For a good two or three years - including in Australia - he was an absolute machine.  He'll be nigh on impossible to replace.  Seems like a good lad, too.  He also has a laughable test wicket to his name.

Amazing game at Taunton in the County Championship. Somerset 77 all out 2nd innings chasing 78. Total carnage!

Was listening to this game. First tied County Championship between Somerset and Lancashire and Somerset's first tied CC game since the late 1930's. Think they said it was Lancashire's first since 1948 or so. Probably also stuffed Somerset's chances of lifting the title as apart from missing out on points for winning the commentators were implying that they might lose points for preparing a sub-standard wicket.

They were reported for a below average pitch against Middlesex last season so aye they might be in some bother. Would seem harsh, there were some terrible shots played and what a game it's produced but as a Somerset fan I might be slightly biased.
