Barring one big score, has Root done anything in this series that Compton couldn't have? Compton had one good and one bad series and was binned for the mean time. I think he'll still feel a bit aggrieved.

They are discussing this on TMS.

Had the Aussies taken that edge at Lords when he was on 8, he'd be averaging 11 for the series.

However, they didn't and he racked up a daddy hundred. Be interesting to see how he fares in the rest of the series though and if the media start to put the pressure on

You have to look at Cooks performances as well and wonder if he might have been happy with a grinder at the other end seeing off the new ball at very least. The fact Root has failed so often has also put pressure on Trott at times and he has been confronted with quite a few times when he was going in with an early wicket and a brand new ball to face. I didn't really see the problem with letting Root carry on up the order for a couple of series and then look to drop him in as an opener. Or even letting him do it in dead rubbers or something.

Anyway, he did make one big score opening, and he does have it in him, but he is going to be confronted with justifying his selection quite soon, folk are already wondering about it now.

Englands top order hasn't worked at all really so far, it has been a slight problem for them at times because they were really sticking 4-450 on the board quite often in recent series past but not for a while really. They have been getting away with it a bit.

Cook will come good, but Australia are rightly making life very difficult for him and his opening partner has failed more often than not which has stuck him under even more pressure to score the runs. He has got out to one or two ropey attempts to score. Trott has too actually, although it has more to do with his lack of feet movement early on in his innings when he is a bit vulnerable to playing round his pads and pushing at balls to score runs early.

It will be interesting to see how the pair of them get on in the afternoon session, any juice there was forthe bowlers has pretty much gone now, it looks like a good batting track and England have pretty obviously set themselves up to be batting all day long if they can.

In the balance at the moment after KP getting out- England need Cook to go on and make a big one, though at the rate he's scoring he'll reach his century about Tuesday.

edit: and there he goes. Advantage Australia now.

Australia won't have to improve radically to beat England in Australia though. England are a decent enough side, but I certainly wouldn't describe them as good, Cook is nowhere near the captain or batsman Strauss was. India and South Africa would wipe the floor with them.

These wickets have been custom made for England, and they're still huffing and puffing. Australia should have won at Trent Bridge and would have if the umpires had made the correct calls, their batting collapsed at Lords after a decent bowling effort and then they should and would have won at Old Trafford but for rain. Excuses maybe but English cricket experts have said these things.

The Australian wickets will obviously favour the home side, and there's far less chance of rain helping England out during an Aussie summer.

I predict a 2-2 in this series and a 4-1 to the home side in Australia

The bowlers in both sides should be able to adapt to the hosts wickets though. If you bowl a decent line and length in both countries you will take wickets. The master was McGrath who basically bowled everything at the off stump bail .

It's the pace of England's batting that's been a surprise- possibly due to too many guys out of form. The cliche is you can't judge a pitch until both teams have batted on it but there certainly don't seem to be many demons in the pitch .

case in point, Bairstow has just scored his first runs for 65 minutes. And then got out next ball. 193-7 and this is a proper collapse.
