I'm off to cry - he's got 4 from the first ball.

CHUCK IT FLOWER/STRAUSS/ALLOFYOU

Well played the Irish and O'Brien in particular.

These sorts of results make a mockery of the decision to freeze all of the associates out of the next World Cup. I wonder if there will be a change of tack now.

Surely it makes sense to have some sort of qualifying system if they want to have a 10 team tournament. They could do it a bit like the Rugby World Cup. Give the quarter-finalists from the previous World Cup automatic slots, and then have a qualifying round to determine the other two qualifiers. Even if it is heavily weighted in favour of the full members, it would at least give the associate teams an opportunity to qualify.

The ICC make FIFA look competent at times. Their reasoning was that the Associates struggle to compete in the 50-over games, so they'll take places off them there but give more Associate T20 places. Whilst it's patently true that the longer the form of the game the more chance for class to tell, and that in this tournamen there have been a series of pumpings doled out to Kenya / Canada (and no doubt Ireland will take a shoeing before the end of the group stage), if you take any incentive to get better away then you're consigning Associate teams to T20 status for evermore.

The real reason is that they shat it after India and Pakistan went out at the first hurdle in 2007 to Bangladesh (yes, I know they're a Test nation) and Ireland. The WC should have been 16 teams, 4 groups of 4, top 2 go through to QFs. These massively elongated 50-over tournaments struggle to hold interest for your average fan whereas the T20 tournaments are over in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, as with everything, money talks and the more big teams that play vs each other, the better for the ICC.

As for today's game, brilliant stuff- nailbiting on the live text. Haven't actually seen any action yet but will record the highlights. Weird how England can produce decent Test teams and T20 teams but not 50 overs. They're not out of it yet though, due to the format ;)

A 4 team group could quite feasibly have been:-

India (ICC rank 2nd)

England (5th)

Ireland (11th)

Holland (13th)

which would have made today's result a LOT bigger for both teams.

Ireland have beaten Pakistand and the Windes in recent tournaments. The Dutch have also had some very good performaces and results. They certainly add something to the tournament despite the fact they will never win it. Kenya are pish.

Kenya got to the semis in 2003 when they hosted it with South Africa and Zimbabwe though. It may have been in part down to the farce that was England's refusal to travel to Zimbabwe and New Zealand not going to Kenya, then the Super Sixes debacle, but they still beat Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh

Great result for Ireland, not only did they beat England, but managed two world records in the process. Also, what a great day for the O'Brien family, I watched the interview his mother and father gave from the stands in Bangalore, his brother is also in the squad

Seemingly, England could poach Kevin O'Brien from Ireland ..... see here .... and the bookies are already in on the action.

England really struggle at 1 day cricket. They do not know there best team, unlike the test 11. SA will rattle this off without breaking sweat.

Wrong team for the pitch - seems to be an aversion to going with spin, so we have Yardy instead of Monty.

Happen is all ODI's. There's a bowling and batting powerplay, they are basically the same thing though.

Basically the first 10 overs are a the first powerplay. You're only allowed 2 fielders allowed outside the 30 yard, I think that's the distance, marker allowing for more boundaries.

After the initial 10 overs each captain gets to choose a period of the game where the same rules apply as before but for only 5 overs. Basically each team has 5 overs of powerplay to use.

The batting team will wait to take it when it suits them best and the runs are flowing whereas the bowling team will want to get them out the way.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Your allowed 3 outside the circle in powerplays 2 and 3 I think.
