Really good test match.

The Curran wicket was huge, and if he can improve his batting he could be the next ben stokes (who is unbelievable right now).

Bess and curran to sit out the next test, with leitch and either Anderson / archer coming in.

Surely broad and woakes can't be dropped though, which makes it a very difficult decision.

Jimmy said on the coverage the other day that he didn't expect any of the seamers to play anymore than 4 of the 6 tests this summer and I think woakes is probably 5th choice seamer at best, for the test side anyway. If they are serious about wanting to prepare for the ashes down under then they should be bringing wood or archer back with Jimmy at the expense of Curran and woakes, harsh as that is on the pair of them

I think they’ll switch the spinner, and that will probably mean Woakes retaining his place ahead of Archer if they don’t want to have three number eleven batsmen again.   You could argue bowlers are selected on the strength of their bowling, but if you have a tail like the West Indies, you are never going to see a game like this out.

Have to admit Stokes is the real deal. I thought late last year a few good matches was somewhat flattering him, he was good but the English press were going overboard, but he is averaging 76 for the year with the bat and now the 3 in the world in test batting rankings. Its not just a few good matches its a major gear shift in his career.

That aside England, have found a stable opening pair that can occupy the crease and live with not scoring for a bit. Tough it out in England with the swinging Duke ball but more so in the rest of the world with Kookaburras and SG it means that seeing off the opening overs will give the big hitting middle order a chance to shine.

The problems for England though as as always they do not have enough pace or spin to prosper outside of home conditions at the moment. They had a weak RSA on the racks but the target has to be coming back from India and Australia with at least draws.

They are in better shape than in recent years. But some of the same old flaws are not going away. (Other than the odd Archer spell.)

Wood, archer and Jimmy all return to the squad for the final test

No Leach in the squad, thankfully (I know he's a left arm spinner, and WI are mainly RHBs, but he's pish).

Interesting that they've got an extra seamer in there, wonder if they are looking at dropping Bess and going with 4 seamers (+ Stokes) and Root bowling any required spin.

Stokes is a doubt as a bowler. This means they may need one of Curran or Woaks as a bowling all rounder. Bess may not get picked, though Old Trafford without a specialist spinner is a bit of a surprise. Root can bowl the occasional spell. Should be at least a day lost to rain. Broad or Anderson may not get picked.

It will likely be controversial who ever is selected.

Curran is the most like Stokes in terms of his bat, but Woakes is in terms of the ball.  I’d imagine it’ll be Archer and Wood that miss out.

There's no way out won't be controversial, as a good case can be made for almost all of them.
