It doesn't matter what they are and if they're flashy etc. If they're not right for your feet/running style, then they'll f**k up your joints.

My running style resembles Quasimodo being chased by an angry mob.Maybe I should get some clogs.

Are you running round in circles? If so, stop and run the other way every so often. Running round and round a track in the one direction can eventually put strain on your joints. If you can get off the pavements and run on grass and tracks then do so, just watch for potholes and uneven surfaces. Concrete won't put you knees under any more stress than any other surface though, if you run properly.

You are going to feel sore all over if you have just started and your joints will probably feel it the most. Once you have built up a bit of strength the pain will vanish. If it doesn't I'd get yourself down to the nearest specialist running shop. They can examine your gait (the way you run) and advise you on your posture and what trainers you may require.

If anyone is suffering from sore legs and joints after a run and want to jump in the bath it might be doing more harm than good. Plunging inflammed muscle tissue and ligaments into hot water makes the recovery process last longer. Ideally, if you are going to have a bath to unwind (and it can help you relax and 'come down' after a run) run ice cold water over your legs and any other area that is suffering post-run. I'd say do that for a minimum of 5 mins if you can before running any bath.

I still haven't managed a run since the marathon (except running for the train). Seeing that even Debbie has managed 5 miles might be the shame that I need to pull the gutties back on :P

Thundermonkey - I had noticed that you have exactly no runs on the Nike plus challenges. I am going to step some more up to last the football season (ending on cup final day) as the month isnt really long enough. It also means that you challengers can be added as the season progresses

Going to go for a run again in a bit. Hopefully do the same run I did the other night, but it's a bit hotter today, so might struggle. Will see how it goes.

Well, it was certainly hotter. It's about 20˚ out there. Didn't struggle though, but I did have to stop and stretch my quads - it's quite a hilly path and my quads are really tight because of that. Timed myself and was actually 2 mins quicker than Monday despite the heat! 5 miles - 39 minutes 13 seconds. Not particularly fast, but I'm working on it, and it's certainly a lot quicker than I could have done this time last month! I wouldn't have even been able to run 5 miles!

Been off it for a week or so mainly because I've been working constantly. Amazing how just a week off makes it more difficult in your mind to get back out to it. Forced myself on Monday and had a nice easy two mile run. Then played football last night which was great - feel so much fitter.

Back from Lanzarote on Monday. Managed to get 7 runs in over the 2 weeks with a total of 45 miles. I still lost fitness though and struggled in the speed session on Tuesday.

Also suffering fron what I think is Posterior Tibilias Tendon injury. Had it for months but have been ignoring it. Now got an appointment with a podiatrist next Thursday.... apologies if my spelling is crap!

  • 3 weeks later...

Anyone else doing the St Andrews hospice 10k a week on saturday?

This is my first 10k race - not expecting a very fast time as it is 4 weeks too early in my training programme but confident that I should be well under the 50 minute mark

Been training for the Glasgow 1/2 marathon, but I've had to stop 3/4 into my last two runs. Pain on outside of knee.....Seems fine when walking, but really sore midway through run, and then climbing stairs afterwards!

....'runner's knee' or Ilio Tibial Band Friction Syndrome? Hitting the swimming pool for my training now, but think my chances of making the 1/2 (would have been my first attempt at the distance) are very slim now!!

Probably and hopefully due to incorrect running shoes. Was just running in a pair of random 'neutral' trainers that I'd purchased prior to even thinking about running. Popped into run4it at the w/end, and they've recommended a trainer with support due to my over-pronating....top tip, get your shoes checked out...!

Bit of rest now from the running, to recover. If I can't manage a 10 miler next week, I'm pulling out :bairn:thumbsdown

Probably should see a physio as well to confirm diagnosis.....

Was thinking of doing that but a twisted ankle a few weeks back put paid to my training.

Next 10k I think is Stirling on the 14th September. Aiming for between 50 and 55 minutes.

The 10k has been run in september in previous years so no idea. There is a cancer research 10k on 26 October if you fancy the longer distance

I spoke to a physio before I started running and he told me that I wouldnt be doing enough distance to bother with specialist shoes to begin with (I think he may have thought I would jack it pretty quick) and when I needed to replace them to go and see a specialist. My guttys are pretty much ready for the bin and will be getting chucked after next saturdays race.
