Gonna take up running in an attempt to get fitter during my pre-season since i'm stepping up to play adult football for my first whole season.

I've got quite wide feet, and was just wondering what would be the best option for running trainers?

Cheers

I've signed up for the EK 10k. My first race. Looking forward to it. I'd like to get low 50min....but I suspect I'll be between 55 and 60. I'm running 5.1 miles in 45 mins at the moment. That was after not running for over a week too. Need to keep training now...Is the 10k hilly? :(

As an aside, my Nike+ sportband is not measuring correct distances....not calibrated it though. Its consistent overmeasure, ie. 5.1 miles recorded as 5.47. 2.5 miles as 2.67miles. Anyone else got one?

10k is the same course as the HM (HM is just two laps).

Its not "hilly" but there are one or two long "inclines" and "declines". Not too demanding though.

I'm now not running EK. Got an invite to a round of golf on the Sat followed by a curry - and that takes preference. One of the rules of the round of golf is you must drink at least 6 alcoholics drinks..... on the course. I suspect that my hangover on the Sunday will render me unable to walk most of the day necer mind run a HM!

If you're going to be doing a decent amount of running you should go to a specialist running shop and have your running style analysed. If you just pick up a pair from JJB or the like there's a good chance you'll end up giving yourself an injury. The trainers might be a bit more expensive than you could get them for in JJB (£10 or £20) but that's a lot cheaper than physio bills!

Flippers.

Seriously, you should get your feet checked out at a specialist running shop like 'run4it'.

If you don't want to do that then try startfitness.co.uk - that's where I buy my running shoes from. I always buy Asics.

I've just got the sportband....whats the challenges? How do they work?

I am not sure but Thundermonkey had talked about setting something up on the Nike+ site where there would be things like the quickest mile and first one to 100 miles. Need to be linked into somekind of group. I havent had a decent scout around the site to see how all the gubbins works yet but might be interesting now that guys who ran the marathon dont have that target.

Cap'n, where do you get the info about what races are coming up and when? I would be up for doing a few you suggested on the previous page but don't know what websites to use.

The 2 best websites to get you started are as follows:

1. Try the fixtures list on the Scottish Athletics website -

Scottish Athletics

Just click on 'calendar' and then 'fixtures' and then select summer 2008

2. Try the Runners World website -

Runners World

The Runners World website is the same guys who publish the monthly magazine which also gives a run down of races. Unfortunately when you click on some of the races you can't see the details unless you are a subscriber (which I am). However you can always try a google search.

Many of the races are shown on both of these links.

Hope this helps.

First run back tonight after my weeks break post Edinburgh, managed a fairley relaxed 6.5 miles in 47 mins, not sure what my next race is going to be, got 2 week hol coming up in 3 weeks time. Did anyone notice the Kilomothon advertised on the Edi marathon website? 26.2km race but the link to the webpage only asks you to express interest. 16.5 miles odd, sounds a fairly good distance to train for.

Following from the Captain's reply can I also recommend the following sites

Born2Run

click on the 'sports diary and online entry' for details of upcoming events

and

Run4It

go to 'events' and then click on the 'events (sports) diary'

I've found both these particulary useful when looking for races

Watty, I've registered for info on the kilomathon and agree it does look like quite a good distance to train for. I hope there's more announced soon. I just googled 'kilomathon' and the only link that comes up is the one for the Edinburgh marathon homepage

As stated early I have just got the ipod gubbins - is anyone interested in some P&B challenges as suggested by TM way back at the outside.

Suggestions for appropriate challenges would be appreciated. I was thinking of the following just to get it up and running

1. fastest mile (in 30 day period);

2. furthest total distance in 30 days; and

3. fastest 10k.

I am happy to organise the invites etc. if you leave your nike + username (mine is diamonds2002). let me know what you thin (hopefully it is the motivation I need)

cheers

Gareth

1. I did a 5.57 split in the Dumbarton 10k last night. Also did a 5.39 mile which included hills a couple of weeks ago in a 1 mile race.

2. I have averaged just over 50 miles per week since the start of this year.

3. I ran the Dumbarton 10k in 37.08 last night. Slightly disappointed that I didn't break 37 mins but still 48 secs off my PB at Troon 4 weeks ago. I'll break 37 before the summer is out - hopefully get near to 36.

Yes we all know you are super but some of us mere mortals haven't been running for the past 3 years.

The very same.

EDIT: it was origionally 10k, not sure why it was reduced.

Quite possibly as 6K fits nicely round the loch, whereas 10K meant that folk were getting round for the part of the second lap before the way was cleared properly and the finish line set up?
