P&b Running Club

Recommended Posts

The programme continues and 1 week after doing 20 minutes and being in a fucking state at the end of it I've moved onto 25 minutes continuous running. This one went so much better there was begging for it to be over, no burning lungs, legs are a bit sore this morning but it was all good and felt a lot easier.

3 weeks left the last of which is running for 30 minutes at a time which might not equate to 5k, but according to samsung I'm doing 10.13 minutes to a mile so pretty confident I can do it.

Did Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile race on Sunday. Great day for it and finished in 68.06 - 45 seconds quicker than last year. Got me in the top quarter of the field.

Wondering about applying for one of the club places for London. Haven't done a marathon before but have done a few halfs and usually do at least one 15 mile run a week on my own, as well as a few others of double figure distance. Would it be possible to get myself ready for the end of April (basically four months after Christmas is out the way) or is London more hassle than it's worth?

It sounds like you’ve already got a very solid base on which to build so you’ll have no problem at all.

A 16 week training block for a marathon is standard. You don’t need to run the full 26.2 miles in training so if you can add a mile on to your long run every couple of weeks until your up around the 20/21 mile mark with a month to go (after which you can taper) you’ll be more than ok. Throw in a couple of hill repeat sessions and some speed-work and you will nail it.

Can’t comment on the London marathon though but i’d imagine it would be a great experience.

Onto the last week and did run no1 which was 30 minutes straight. Fucking great run as far as I'm concerned 2.97 miles in exactly 30 minutes so almost there and it's all fallen into place. The last couple of weeks I've had some real inconsistency and felt shite after a couple of them but today I was flying think I might have got the 5k but the legs just faded in the last 5 minutes.

Also went and got my gait done turns out I need a support shoe as my left foot in particular kicks out when it lands so I've bought some asics that have been whipped off me for Christmas.

Well it's done 9 weeks 27 runs I've gone from a wheezing red faced mess to well a wheezing red faced mess really but the difference is there's half an hour of running to blame for it now.

My last run and the plan was to knock out 5k regardless of how long it took. What actually happened was that I thought I'd explore a bit and ended up going up a hill that looked like a gentle slope 8 mins later and it was like looking down Ben Nevis. Onwards and through the woods where it was particularly wet and sloppy and the inevitable fall came but up I got then the mud decided it was hungry and had a go at swallowing my trainer so quick hop back for that. For reasons unknown and the first time ever I got a pounding head ache and off went the music.

By the time I hit tarmac I'd had enough and grudgingly finished the half hour doing just 2. 71 miles it was fucking gash.

That said I've completed every single run first time and I'm in such a better place with it. Think I'm going to just run for a month try and do 30 minutes 3 times a week but might experiment with shorter times but faster speeds, hill climbing, trying to stretch the distance don't know really the ultimate goal is to try and do a 10k in the new year. This has got under my skin now I find it great for stress and it's just me the music and the road, that said occasionally I'll go with a friend for a bit of a catch up.

Well done you've done great to get this far. I wouldn't worry about how far you get if you go for a timed run and vice versa how quick it takes if doing a distance run. Just run within yourself and it will all fall into place. I done my first 10k this year and at the start of the year thought it would be unachievable but it was actually quite enjoyable and now got my sights on further distances. Love just going for a run now without a route planned and seeing where it takes me, its great that you can feel like doing that now rather than just trying to get it over with as quick as possible. Keep it going!

Done 3 more runs since finishingbthe c25k. I've actually done 5k now in 31 minutes 58 seconds which I'm eased with for the first time and it's not a million miles form half an hour. I've been out just for a run no pressure or target and I'm finding I can run at a really good pace for 15 to 20 minutes but end up plodding along for the last 10. Think the problem is I go belting along far too fast to begin with.

Is it normal to start obsessing with things like pace and distance etc?

Oh and it's fucking freezing so much to my wife's great amusement the tights have been making more appearances.

Found out today I'd been given the one and only club place. More worried about sorting travel and hotels than the actual race!

I did the Couch to 5k a couple of years ago. Finished it and was running home every night during the week and was flying. Was in the best shape I'd been in in years.

Due to mental health issues I stopped and got horribly out of shape. Picked it up again last year but stopped again due to being an idiot and not being able to cope with shit in my mind. So stupid because it always helped as well.

This year I've gotten abysmally fat, disgustingly so. Started up the programme from scratch again a couple of months ago. Had to take a couple of weeks off throughout as got a couple of injuries. Finished it again though and now running home 3 nights a week. It's just over 3 miles from work to home. Despite being almost 18st last time I stood on scales, which was a bit ago so I'm probably heavier, I can do the 3 miles home in about 40 minutes  This includes an uphill bit that kills me. I feel like I'm getting faster, especially over the last couple of weeks, although a stitch slowed me down last week twice.

Back on it tomorrow. Will be starting to lose weight due to huge lifestyle changes now so will be interested to see how quick I could do it then. Hopefully the hill section won't be a killer either!

Not really in to doing marathons or any of that stuff (would rather get in to cycling again, which I plan to do once I'm not too heavy to get on a bike!) but it's free and good to build up fitness and will be upping it to every week day shortly.

Agree with pub car king about the feeling when you're right in to it and it's just you and the music.

I go through a hoor of a lot of trainers though! Wear them out so quick, especially the heel and the heel part inside the trainer itself. Can't wait till payday to replace my current pair!

Stick with it man it's great. I don't suffer particularly with my mental health but I do have a bit of a stressful job at times. I find a good run is great for this almost as much benefit as you get fornthe physical health.

I've been a bit ill recently some sort of bug or virus has killed all my energy and everything aches so I've not been out now for nearly a week and I'm missing it.

Well done pub! I’ve downloaded c25k again. Need start from scratch after extended period doing sod all. I had pneumonia and sepsis at the end of April and I’ve had a series of chest infections since

i did a 4 mile walk yesterday and plan on first c25k tomorrow as I’m just about over yet another chest infection.

I'm going from 5k to 10k using the attached plan. Then at the beginning of may me and 3 others will be doing a relay as part of a marathon weekend where we each do about 6.5 miles each.

If you stick to that plan you'll absolutely skelp it when it comes to your relay challenge. Great dedication all the very best to you.

Good luck to you - you should use parkruns for some of your 5k runs to make it a bit more fun.

Anyone got any decent marathon training plans? I've never had a proper plan when getting ready for a race - I just go out and run a route at whatever pace I can be bothered. Lots of the plans online confuse me with all the different paces and distances I should be doing!

I’d really interested in a marathon plan too. Doing Edinburgh in May (hopefully) and can usually train for a half marathon in a couple of months, so thinking I’ve got enough time?

Anyone in the know think there's much point in spending £100 plus on trainers? Or would a 60-70 pair be alright, assuming I get ones which suit my feet. Not keen on spending more than 100

Don't think I've ever spent more than £50 on running shoes and never had any problems with any of them. plenty online deals just now you could easily pick up a good pair for £50 ish. Personally I would never pay £100 for a pair no need unless you need specialised ones.
