Hillwalking Thread

Wee trip up north last week resulted in An Teallach from Dundonnell in perfect conditions. Going over the ridge in winter is a bit beyond my skillset, but Bidean A'Ghlas Thuil was superb.

Then two days later went up Quinag. Great views, but wind was murder, so bailed after the first couple of summits.

Glorious.

I had a slightly more modest outing, the terminally boring Carn na Caim on 12/2 followed by the much, much better day on Beinn a'Chaorainn and Beinn Teallach. Pretty tough going in deepish snow with a gammy knee, but good, followed by a fine drive home on Sunday via Glencoe.

Away again this weekend, then a knee op and a few weeks off.

Me and a mate are going for a hill walk tomorrow. Any recommendations for a couple of beginners?

It needs to be within a reasonable driving distance from Glasgow.

How long do you want to walk for? define beginner?

If you dont have skiils and equipment stay below the snow line. Conic Hill at Balmaha is only a 2 hour max walk but you will get stupendous views for energy expended and you get a pint easy enough at the bottom.

Just found this thread and had a quick trawl through a lot of it.

I see by the end of 43 pages a lot of the personnel have changed over the years, though AyrshireTon is still hanging in there. How many Munros is that now?

I did them all during the 1980s and finished on A'Mharconaich in 1989 with a big summit party of about 55 including a case and a half of champagne which I had to buy for my club members and mates. I'm Munroist no 695 out of about 5000 if anybody's interested, but I know no 293 who completed in 1982 and I've met Hamish Brown no 62...

I've also done about 140 Corbetts and 107 Munros on my second round. Done some of them 6 or 7 times mind. Also did the WHW in 1983.

Almost stopped bagging hills now as I'm 60 and always been asthmatic but it has got worse as I've got older.

3 shots:

Me on the Cobbler

Me on Sgurr nan Coireachean

Off for a few weeks now to have & recover from an Arthroscopy. Signed off last week with Geal Charn (Monadhliath) in deep snow, and a glorious circuit of the West Drumochter hills.

Hopefully will be fit for a week's walking in the Fort William area in May

That middle one looking over to Ben Alder is stunning. Had a few days around Drumochter and finished on A'Mharconaich but never got a decent view down the loch.

However I did Ben Alder on a day like that, and stayed at Ben Alder cottage. The stars were amazing.

Anyone recommend Munros possible to reach by public transport from Glasgow in a day? I've done all of the Arrochar Alps.

http://steverabone.com/MunroWalker/munros_by_public_transport.htm

Munro's by public transport database.

The most obvious would be Ben More and Stob Binnein from Crianlarich and the Loch Ossian munros from Corrour, Beinn na Lap on north side and Carn Dearg and Sgor Gaibhre on the south being two separate trips.

If you have a bike it opens up many more options.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a hankering to get back involved with the hill walking recently. Climbed Ben Vane and Ben Vrackie a few times when I was a kid but fell by the wayside with growing up, working, uni etc. I reckon I'll get back into this in the summer after exams. Anyone know of any hill walking groups in the Edinburgh area? I don't mind firing up a few myself but wouldn't hurt having a squad alongside. If I ask my mates to join they'll screw their noses up, or come once and pie it in.

Been sitting at 58 for a while now, needing a few good days this summer.

Done 34 Corbetts (chapters 0 and 1 in the book plus a few randoms) and 6 Grahams - the last of which was Green Lowther, which barely counts as its a tarmac road all the way to the summit clutter. I chose to do it so that my boy could come too.
