Leeds United boss Neil Warnock needs funds - Norman Hunter

Leeds United legend Norman Hunter says manager Neil Warnock should be given money to improve his squad in the January transfer window.

Warnock has been subjected to criticism from some supporters after mixed results in the last few weeks.

Hunter played for Leeds between 1962 to 1976, helping the club to their first ever league titles and FA Cup win.

"You don't get the number of promotions Neil has got if you are a bad manager," he told BBC Radio Leeds.

"His teams aren't pretty but they're effective and he needs some money to spend before we can judge him."

Hunter's trophies for Leeds

  • Football League First Division : 1968-69, 1973-74
  • Football League Second Division: 1963-64
  • FA Cup: 1972
  • League Cup: 1968
  • FA Charity Shield: 1969
  • Inter-Cities Fairs Cup: 1968, 1971

"We just need a bit more quality and players who are better than what we already have. I'd like to see one or two people come in.

"We're not far off and it isn't easy but we need a bit more if we are going to get in the play-offs."

The Elland Road side, who will also face Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round after beating Birmingham City in their third round replay, are currently five points behind sixth-placed Watford.

GFH Capital completed their takeover of the club last month and said they would support the manager but that January was "not a great time to do business".

Meanwhile, Hunter, who is selling his Leeds memorabilia at auction, says his one regret from his time playing for the club is that he never lifted the European Cup.

The 69-year-old played for the club during their most successful era but the closest they came to winning Europe's most prestigious competition was defeat by Bayern Munich in the 1975 final.

"The only thing I'm disappointed about is that there's no European Cup medal in there," he continued.

"Someone asked me if I was selling my shirt from that game but I honestly don't know where it is. I was that upset that I don't know what I did with it.

"Medals don't mean that much to me. For me it was about being at Leeds United and playing with that group of players and staff, it was magic."

Following discussion between both clubs and West Yorkshire Police it has been agreed that the fixture against Cardiff City at Elland Road on Saturday February 2 can revert to a 3pm kick off from the current scheduled kick-off time of 12.30pm.

We apologise for any inconvenience this late change of kick-off time may cause, but feel even at this stage, the vast majority of fans would welcome the change to allow more time to travel to Elland Road.

Cardiff fans will still be required to exchange vouchers for match tickets at a rendezvous point and the coaches will be escorted to the stadium for the fixture.

This change of kick-off time has been made possible due to the reduction in the potential of disorder as a result of the improved behaviour of the minority of fans who have previously acted in an inappropriate manner from both sides.

We would appeal for this improvement in overall behaviour to continue for the benefit of the majority of fans.

Any tickets purchased for the fixture will still be valid, however, if any fan cannot attend then a full refund of the match ticket will be given, if you contact the ticket office on 0871 334 1992 within seven days of this announcement.

The photo's below were taken inside the home dressing room at Elland Road during a stadium tour 2011 - 2012 season. The letter is from an Ex Serviceman to Ken Bates (I assume it was sent to Ken during the 2007 relegation season) it was blown up, made into a poster and fixed to the dressing room wall. The intention was to motivate the players, I did wonder what Becchio made of it.

Live on ESPN on sunday 17th Feb at 2pm.

from the OS:-

Our FA Cup fifth round trip to Manchester City will be played on Sunday February 17 (2pm).
As with our fourth round win against Tottenham, the tie will be screened live on ESPN.
United manager Neil Warnock is focusing firmly on the league matches ahead of the cup clash, but he said: "It's fabulous to come up against the Champions and with some of the great players that they have.
"It's a game we'll all look forward to, but we've got league matches against Cardiff, Wolves, and Middlesbrough before then, and they're our immediate priority, starting with the league leaders on Saturday."
The FA Cup clash will be United's first trip to Man City since December 2003 when we drew 1-1 during our relegation season from the Premier League.
The Sunday date for the FA Cup tie means our home game against Blackpool will now need a new date, along with our home game against Peterborough United.
