Presumably the 1st Street as the most prestigious gets renamed after one of their gubbins, usually slaveowning and white supremacist heroes. Then they can't replace it because that fucks with the logic of the grid system.

Semi-correct…the most often used names for renaming 1st Street seem to be MLK Jr., Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez.

I thought that rather than a 1st you might have a "main" street?

The usual process was the town was laid out in a corner of the junction of two main roads. One would sometimes be labeled Main Street, and the other was often named for the town or a city it connected to (Watagua Road or Denton Highway). Then streets in one direction, such a south from the east-west road, would be named for trees or locals, the other direction, such as east of the other road, would be 1st through whatever, often 10th.

In some places, roads in one direction would be named “Street” and the other way named “Avenue”, hence places with locations like the corner of 3rd and 7th…where local convention dictates if the street or avenue is named first. In other places, if they built on both sides of the “main street” (or Main Street) they would call one side Street and the other Avenue.

The third weird one is NE/SE/NW/SW, where you can have the same house number in four locations…such as 101 NW 1st, 101 SW 1st, etc. This happened with building all around the two main streets, and in some places can reach numbers in the mid 100’s+ (144th Street in Oklahoma City comes to mind). The alternative form is labeling a street E/W or N/S before the street name, base upon its position for one of the main roads.

The BBC dropping the 'City' suffix from Brechin City when all the other clubs retain theirs:

Probably worse is their League 2 table (that can happily fit in "Bonnyrigg Rose") containing "Annan Athletic" and then just "Forfar"

Obviously some sort of bias against Angus by the BBC here. Angusism?

Perhaps Cityism too seeing as Elgin have also lost their suffix.  Ayr United just being "Ayr" blows any "maybe it's a space thing?" out of the waters.

It's the inconsistency that's grinding my gears.

Is it not the Main St / 1st Street split the top spot.

Irvine has made an effort with a First, Second & Third Avenue,

But non of this American digits nonsense, properly written out.

Trade Descriptions made us drop 'Athletic' when Irvine and Harkins were playing.

Strongly worded email to the Head of the BBC required.

On the subject of street names, I'd like to nominate generic, irrelevant, inventively bankrupt names in new housing developments.  Elm Place, The Firs, The Rowans, Osprey Heights* etc etc, particularly when there aren't any of those things nearby.  Can't be too hard to name them after something found locally, such as one of the old farms, or the woodland they ripped up to build over.

*there's one of these in Inverurie that I'm really hoping was an in-joke nod to Still Game.

Irvine has an estate, always had 9 streets, named after Scottish lochs in alphabetical order (Carron, Dunvegan, Etive, Leven, Lomond, Maree, Morar,  Rannoch & Shiel).

After about 40 years of this a new street was being built where school used to be. It was named Tay Place,

After the Council committee argued for about an hour over the pronunciation of somewhere like Tarbhaidh or Tarbhaidh or something similar.

The decision being if we can't agree and say it right no-one else will.

In our community, all street names are after religious characters.  I'm in Elijah (steady on Kenneth).

Where I used to live there were 6 multis, 3 blocks in each.  They were named after golf courses in alphabetical order.  Funnily enough, the most famous one, St Andrews, wasn't included.  The roads around were also named after courses.  The area was originally a golf course before the scheme was built.

Kirkton in Dundee has a strange mix of north of Scotland (Beauly Av, Helmsdale Av), the Lake District (Keswick, Ulverston and Coniston Terrace, Ambleside Terrace and Gardens, Derwent Avenue) and a little Forres enclave (avenue and crescent).

Nae wonder they riot.

It screams horrible newbuild estate when you see a group of streets named after trees.

Can also add a seeming aversion to the more normal street/road/avenue kind of terminology...the more Gates, Wynds, Groves, Walks and so on there are the more likely a place is to have been thrown up by a Barratt tribute act in the last 20 years.
