My mad old uncle explained it thus.

"Thomson, no p, for no Pope."

My wife's maiden name is Thomson. No p.

My father in law was adamant of the no p. He also hates the colour green.

He also didn't speak to me other than grunts for a year because he thought I was a Catholic because I didn't support rangers.

The quicker that generation dies the better.

His logic was that superfluous letters in a name indicated Catholicism and cited Clark with an e as a further example.

In my class at school there was an Alasdair, two Alastairs and an Aleister whose dad was presumably pished when he registered the name

No Crystal Tips though

Maybe Aleister's folks liked a bit of the old dark arts and Satan?

The staunch Scottish Protestant subculture truly is a meeting of the minds.

Lies. I think they have Nothing In Common but you'd have to ask a Doctor Doctor of genetics.

It was all to do with The Reformation apparently. Catholics thought the extra letters made them seem more important and relevant.

In Englandshire and over here in the ‘murca I have to spell out my last name. Despite being about 1000 years old these chunts can’t get past the 100 years or so of anglicising it.

It doesn’t even sound like the way they spell it!

In fact ETA, just reminded weegies bugger up the spelling too

Sounds like the weirdo Covenanters just didn't know how to spell their names correctly tbh.

That is one of those names like Clare, Lyn, Lindsay, and so on where you are just subjecting the kid to a lifetime of spelling out their name for people.

One of my mates named his first born "Thomis".

"Erm, no, not with an "A", with an "I"".

An interview with DC Thomsons would have scrambled his mind
