RiG
The Aberdeen - Inverness service is pretty bad for getting those cramped 2 carriage things - especially at peak time. I caught a train at the back of 5 back to Sneck and it was a measely 2 carriages - people standing in the aisle. Then in comes one of these new fangled Turbostars from Dyce with 12 people on it. Half A Person
I recieved a reply from Scotrail today after complaining about the lack of carriages. Dear Mr Reid (that's me) Thank you for contacting First ScotRail concerning your journey from Perth to Stirling. It is our aim to provide a dependable service at all times and we are sorry you are not receiving the service you have every right to expect. We do try to provide sufficient accommodation on our trains to ensure that passengers travel in comfort but we know that overcrowding does exist on some trains especially at peak travel times. There is no statutory limit on the number of passengers standing on our trains and although you may have a valid ticket for travel, we cannot guarantee you a seat. This does not mean that we are satisfied when our trains are crowded in this way. However, there is not much we can do to stop people joining an already crowded train if it is their wish to do so. Although we are aware of the problem you have highlighted, we only have a limited number of trains. I can assure you however, that we spend a great deal of time planning the movements of all our trains to make sure we provide the best possible service. We do aspire to improving and supplementing our fleet. However, I hope that you can appreciate that a substantial sum would be needed to obtain new trains. Looking to the future, we will press for funding with our partners and where this becomes available, it will be used to increase or replace our rolling stock. Please also take into consideration that, unfortunately, if trains suffer technical faults or vandalism, they normally need to return to the depot for repairs. When this happens, we must find an alternative train, which sometimes cannot provide the same seating capacity. I can however assure you that, we know this can lead to overcrowding and try to avoid this happening whenever possible. I appreciate you taking the time to contact First ScotRail and do hope that you will remain a valued customer of First ScotRail and continue to make use of our services. Yours sincerely Sarah Jenkin Customer Relations Advisor They spend ' a great deal of time planning the movement of their trains'. Not long enough! They didn't actually directly answer my question which was why do they actually reduce the carriages at peak time. Curse you Sarah Jenkin!
Laid Back Maverick
I think we should all keep at record of all travel by rail - time of travel, number of carriages etc. After a few months we should accumulate our results as show ScotRail they're talking oot their erses! RiG
Im off to Aberdeen in February but after reading this thread, i am seriously considering getting the stagecoach Get the Megabus. If you book in enough times it'll cost a mere £1!
Reina
To be fair, at peak times on the Aberdeen-Inverness train, they have 5 carriages operating, which is good. However, there was no trolley on the train today and I fancied a coffee - I asked why there wasn't one and apparently the person who does the trolley on that service had slept in.... On a side note - I think the smiley at the end of Skinny Jean's paragraph was because she's clever and knows about these things. I hardly think she was smiling because of the possibility of a train crash, somehow.... Cheers for the explanation, SJ

Guest
If you book the train in advance, you'll get a return for less than £
RiG
Would you not need a railcard for that though?
Guest
Nope. Apex fares can be booked up to 4 weeks in advance by anyone. It does restrict you to your chosen departure time though.

Captain Kerthorse
If I'm ever heading to Edinburgh i try to keep to the GNER services so at least I know I'll get a flaming seat. Last dealings I had with a Megabus was when one Megabus pelted right up the doupe of another one on the A90. Got pulled up to Forfar Academy to help out with the passengers. cbhaf
I stopped using Megabus from Aberdeen because they were practically going round corners on two wheels, then there was a crash where I think the driver was killed (a year or two back). GNER is the way to go, if you can book ahead a bit, its worth the extra I think
