Fresh from Sunday's thriller the next edition has been drawn.

Gala cannot defend their title having exited EQC at Kinnoull back in August. Bonnyrigg debut with a trip into the great metropolis.

Whats the format of this ?

Im now confused. I have not long taken an interest in EoS etc

Hearts and Hibs play EOS Shield... other member clubs in SPFL play in EOS Cup (aka City Cup) alongside qualifier/s... and rest in Lowland + East of Scotland leagues play in EOS Qualifying Cup.

So back when there was just Berwick in SPFL it was a straight Final v QC winner. Then with Edinburgh City + Kelty going up (and Berwick down) it was SFs v finalists... in last edition, unusually, it so happens Gala + Linlithgow both won to set-up Sunday's final. Then for this season Bonnyrigg went up too. If say Spartans go up and Bonnyrigg survive QFs would need introduced next season.

To quote Sunday's programme:

Traditionally the East of Scotland Cup is held-over and played the next season in a similar manner to the Community Shield, European Supercup, Club World Cup, etc.

although in recent years some ties have been held in late spring or pre-season.

I saw Meadowbank win it at Shielfield once.

The pwopah nawty Berwick contingent pelted us with coins and stones and the supporters' bus got a police escort out of Berwick...

Why didn't Livingston continue the EoS membership?

They quit when the mad Italian was in charge - or was it the mad Irishman? - and never returned. They have yo-yo'd around over the last decade-and-a-half in terms of division (tier 2 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 3 > 2 > 1) and having a youth set-up or not which probably had a part in it... e.g. being in Premiership currently they'd hardly field first-team.

They'd never built up much of a heritage in the cup anyway: only won it a couple of times IIRC.

That would be 1989 by my reckoning Tam? I'm sure it was simply over-exuberance :whistle...

As it stands

next edition = Kelty, Edinburgh, Bonnyrigg + Sauchie/UoS

following edition = Kelty, Edinburgh, Bonnyrigg, Spartans + 4 Qualifying Cup Semi finalists?

Has it ever had 8 teams in it historically?

It had 6 from 1931-32 to 1937-38... comprising 4/5 Scottish League clubs + 1/2 qualifiers playing 2x QFs > 2x SFs > Final.

The EoSFL fixtures have no mention of the 2023-24 cup. Have we finally given up the pretense of the city cup happening in the same season as the qualifying cup?

It doesn't happen in the same season, it happens the season after (the 2022-23 City Cup takes place in the 2023-24 season).

The last couple years it was initially scheduled for the same season, but each year it was inevitably postponed to the next season.

Tuesday 30th January
(SF) Kelty Hearts 1-4 University of Stirling

Kelty fielded near enough their first XI, controlled most of opening half, and led... but the students levelled shortly before break, then hit 3 in quick succession around the hour mark to stun the Fifers from 2 tiers above. Crowd be 150-200.

Edinburgh City & University of Stirling meet in the showpiece.
