And that's the thing - that style worked until teams learned how to counter it. Spain still try and play that way and they get nowhere.

The game evolves.

Spain were/are "tiki-taka". A Basque idea originally associated with Javier Clemente's (unsuccessful) 1990s Spain. Luis Enrique was a key man in those Clemente sides so its little surprise he revived it (again unsuccessfully) during his recent stint as Spain manager.

Guardiola, his Barca, Bayern and Man City, is all "juego de posición", positional play. It owes more to Johan Cruyff and Marcelo Bielsa than Spanish tradition. Arteta also does it at Arsenal now. While Guardiola does have a liking for smaller stature, technically and tactically gifted players like Xavi, Iniesta, Lahm, Bernardo and David Silva. It's not to play tiki-taka with them.

Grealish was great for Aston Villa tbf, but suppose he was getting the ball constantly as the club was built around him.

He does well for City but hes not really a match winner at that level and kind of just merges into the background.

Feels like in a weird middle ground at England for him.
