Off to Melbourne next week, with a few days up in Brisbane/Sunshine coast thrown in.

Looking forward to the food and coffee scene as it seems to be very vibrant.

We're staying down in the Mornington peninsula but will be in the city a fair bit, might even have to find something for my 6 year old to keep him entertained, but im hoping he'll learn to enjoy coffee shops and wine

Any recommendations welcome

for restaurants, coffee shops, wineries, day trips etc

Dromana, Portsea, Sorrento for day trips. Loads of good places to visit all over the peninsula. Get ferry from Sorrento to Queenscliffe and they have the Bellarine Railway which your 6 year old will enjoy https://bellarinerailway.com.au

Train to Melbourne, tram to St Kilda and eat at the Stoke House or Queen Victoria Markets as load of eating places in and nearby or Hosier Lane or other lanes in the city usually loads of coffee and eating places. The Museum in Melbourne isn’t too bad and the zoo used to be great.

April 1 is the last day of daylight savings and clocks go back so sunset will be between 6-6.30 from the 2nd.

Never been but if you like penguins or want to see where the motorbike races are held it probably is.  There is a free circle line tram in Melbourne CBD where they used to use an old tram that you can hop off/on. Suggest if you’re using public transport to look at getting a Myki Card. Also if driving you can buy a day pass for toll roads. ETA only if driving to Melbourne and back.

ETA: Should add I live in Adelaide not Melbourne.  He doesn’t post as much as he did but @Arabdownunder might have tips as he lives in/near Melbourne but on the other side of Port Philip Bay.

Some of the graffiti / street art around Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane is worth looking at.

The free tram that goes around the CBD and down to the Docklands is worth a trip, there's commentary on board too.  However the last two times I've visited in the last 6 months its operation has been very hit and miss.

If you want a decent view, the Skydeck on the South Bank is decent.  You can hire a wee speedboat and drive along the river too.

If you're driving into the CBD, have a look on the web for a Hook Turn before you go!

We went to Philip Island and enjoyed the day - It's a fairly drove there and back but good.  We also went to the 12 Apostles on the Ocean Road trip.

Something else to see is the Shrine of Remembrance, which might not be everyone's cup of tea.

We did a bike trip round Melbourne - Freddy's Bikes - which is quite central and near the Yarra if he's still there.

If you go over to the MCG there are lots of different sports arenas nearby - AAMI Stadium  - major tenants when we went in 2017 were Melbourne Storm (NRL), Super rugby team Melbourne Rebels (Rugby Union) and the 2 A-League football teams Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City.

It is also known as the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, and looks like a number of footballs interlinked from the outside.

You will pass where the Olympic Games were held in 1956 and while the athletics arena has long gone the swimming pool remains - it is an outdoor swimming pool and the area is now used by Collingwood (Aussie Rules) for training.  The Hisense Arena is nearby, and is used for indoor games/sports (basketball, netball, cycling, tennis, ice hockey) and concerts.  The last arena is where the Australian Open (Tennis) takes place the 2 main areas are The Rod Laver Arena and The Margaret Court Arena.

There is also a statue of Ferenc Puskas nearby.

You can also go to Fitzroy Gardens where you will see Captain Cook’s house, which was his parent's house in Yorkshire.  I believe it was moved from England.

Melbourne was easily my favourite place in Australia.

Worth visiting the inner north hipster suburbs of Carlton, Fitzroy and Collingwood. Tons of cafes, restaurants and bars hidden away here and quite a nice vibe in these areas. Richmond also has some good eateries.

St Kilda is a bit of a hole but worth a visit.

The main roads in the CBD can feel a bit lacking in bars and eateries so make sure you head down the lanes and 'little' streets (Little Collins St for example) to find them. Campari House on hardware lane has a decent rooftop bar, best to do a bit of research first to find places.

It's worth going to an Aussie Rules game when you're here as the season has just started. All Melbourne teams play at the MCG or Docklands (both located at the edge of the CBD) so there will be 3-4 games on each weekend. Tickets are cheap and available online easily so this is well worth doing.

Make sure you pack cold weather gear too. Autumn has arrived and it's going to be pretty cold and damp all next week. Definitely don't turn up with just shorts and flip flops!

Autumn most certainly has arrived, were down in mornington peninsula staying and hasn't stopped raining since we got here! had 5 days I on Brisbane area and even on good Friday there was a storm delaying our flights back. Got another 10 days here heading up to an air bnb on Tuesday for a couple me of nights in the city and see a bit of the comedy festival too
