Pollok mad Posted March 13, 2023 Share Posted March 13, 2023 (edited) Being honest, I can't see this being anything more than an extra qualifying round or two, which with the volume of teams getting licensed was something that was always going to happen, you can't increase the number of entrants without increasing the number of rounds. In the recent past with 2 preliminary rounds, HL/LL were automatic to 1st Round proper, while everyone below & qualifiers were in the Prelims. Yeah that makes sense that some of Lowland & Highland League will now need to join us in the West & East in qualifying round(s) due to increase in number of teams. craigkillie Posted March 13, 2023 Share Posted March 13, 2023 In an ideal world, I think Scottish Cup entry would be completely independent of licensing, with all clubs in the top (say) 6 tiers getting automatic entry and then qualifying tournaments played the previous season for the tiers below that. My first condition would be that the clubs should need to provide evidence that these youths will get an opportunity to play in their club's first eleven. Two of the clubs involved have not given a single minute of football to any their academy recruits this season, yet they’re campaigning for a new division to help develop said youngsters. Some of these players have been at their parent clubs since childhood, yet as soon as they look ready to step up a ready made foreign player is recruited at a considerable cost to the club. For this reason talents like Ben Doak and Billy Gilmour have been developed for years then allowed to slip through the net to English clubs for a minute fraction of the cost expended to recruit those “ready made” players. Have the people who are willing to fund this new division taken the time to ask the managers of their clubs if they will be given a fair opportunity to play for the first team? Or will a “ready made” foreign player always be their preference? You entire point falls apart here... Do you see the influx of youth when Rangers were relegated to League 2 and were apparently skint? No neither did we. They still CHOSE to go out and buy in international players on crazy wages to draw against Peterhead. Even if there was a clear trend of talent regularly graduating from the colt sides to the first team squads it still shouldn't be the role of Tier 5 teams to facilitate it like paid sparring partners.
