Tier 5 - Reconstruction Proposals - Effect on West?

Recommended Posts

I see the SPFL / SFA are trying to get 6 B teams into tier 5 along with 2 from Highland / Lowland League with all leagues below moving down a tier. Seems a shambles and really detrimental to any pyramid!!

Surely West of Scotland, East of Scotland and good guys in Lowland / Highland League need to get together to stop this and create a proper tier 5 with no B teams?!

Aye, it needs to be stopped.

There's a SPFL Reserve League now which means this proposal is completely unjustified.

For me, it's all about the OF clubs setting up plans for a future that sees them out of top level Scottish football, but with a heavy influence at Championship level as that'll be their aim for their colt teams.

Shoehorning in whatever way you cut it is detrimental to every club at a lower level in the pyramid.

If, as seems to be the case, the HL and LL would have to sign off on the necessary changes to the Club 42 playoff rules, there is very little danger of this actually happening. The LL clubs are supposed to be meeting on Monday to discuss it. A clearer picture should emerge after that has happened.

Will go ahead next season 24/25 without any shadow of a doubt if not before. The colt teams will buy their way back in to the lowland league for another season if they don’t accept conference league starting season 23/24. It’s all becoming rather predictable and was my fear when the new set up was being implemented a couple of seasons ago. There is very much a lot of self interest with no intent to have a proper pyramid system in place unfortunately

Can’t believe there is as little attention on this as there presently is. At worst a complete lock out at best yet another barrier in the way which we can seemingly do nothing about

For most teams in the EOS or WOS - apart from the Premier Division clubs who may be in a position to get promoted - what goes on at tier 5 won't impact them. However they should of course support the other clubs and the leagues to ensure the pyramid is opened up.

If the new division/league goes ahead it may well take in LL clubs which voted in the B teams into the LL. With these clubs gone there is every chance that the LL's automatic relegation to and promotion from  the WoS etc will be changed for the better.

If the new league/division doesn't go ahead there must be a fair chance that the balance of power in the LL will be changed in any case in favour of removing the B teams. This change in the balance of power should also be expected to affect the relegation/promotion situation with the WoS etc for the better.

In either case the LL relegation/promotion situation with the WoS is surely headed for change for the better in the foreseeable future.

If the new division/league doesn't get the go ahead then the B teams will have no-where to go except their own Reserves league - which is what they should have done in the first place!

Kind of. Imo the vast majority of clubs came across to the WoSFL out of necessity once clubs like Kilwinning and Clydebank jumped so therefore you're right in that they're not bothered. However, anyone in the "the Pyramid is great innit?" camp very much will be impacted by this.

Strongly doubt any of the licensed clubs have gone through the process to be a LL regular but, if this goes ahead of looks highly likely that that will be their fate. All to suit the ugly sisters. Good old SFA!

There was no doubt the juniors had to modernise like everything else and to be honest we have a really good set up now in the WOSL, the premier league is great value for money for the paying fan and for the record more longer term planning of the fixtures great progress and far more professional. What has happened to the Scottish Junior Cup is the biggest negative in all of this as we had a national competition with great tradition which teams walked from thinking they were now a “senior” team.  The proposals outlined should be a wake up call to where some clubs think we are, we are still be looked at as junior clubs by the SPFL they have no loyalty to this level and don’t intend to change. At the end of the day money talks and if this is supported by parent club finances it will go through. The only way we should have come into this set up from day 1 was the top 6 in the lowland league, East and West entered tier 5 from day 1.

Tom Johnston sold the jerseys by not engaging for years though.

It is all about progress and to be fair the licensing process has really made clubs sort out facilities and the operation of their clubs which is no bad thing in itself and takes the clubs who made the commitment up a level. For us at Lok it made us sort out long overdue matters like toilets/disabled facilities and floodlighting amongst others.

I do agree however that the insertion of a further tier is a real blow to ambition.

Unfortunately the SPFL reserve league is not fit for purpose and therein lies the problem for SPL teams looking for genuinely competitive games for their fringe players.

More SPL teams looking the way of Rangers Celtic and Hearts and money talks.

Is it fair to lower league teams with a bit of ambition. No

Will it happen. Probably.

This is the first season of the reserve league. Like everything else it should evolve and improve.

Besides, Rangers and Celtic have no interest in the reserve league, their ambitions are for their clubs and theirs alone.

So club 42 will become club 52?

Is there promotion out of this new league?

Can the B teams be promoted or relegated?

Day 1 was when the Lowland League was set up, though.

It wasn’t as simple as that.

When it was set up there was no promotion to the league and it was basically an east of Scotland senior league stitch up.These clubs had nothing to lose by joining it along with non clubs like EK and Cumbernauld Colts.
