It was apparent five minutes in at Hamilton when it was first attempted and it was as quick today. This is less shite than Tuesday because we're at least maintaining a 4-2-3-1, but we're still poor because we can't carry the lack of defensive quality in that front four. You could maybe get away with three of Muirhead, Oakley, Miller and Ali Crawford at a push, but all four just isn't going to work. We can't press effectively and we're exposed defensively - it feeds into the lack of protection the midfield get and never winning second balls, although that could also be helped by habing Gillespie or Grimshaw in the sitting two. vikingTON Posted March 11, 2023 Share Posted March 11, 2023 Our defenders have done very well so far, but there's always an error or two in them. The problem is that our midfield in its 'upgraded' form no longer presses effectively and is too easy to play through. Gillespie and Robbie Crawford should be deep midfielders (Crawford box to box) and with more hard workers in the wide areas. Instead we're trying to shoehorn in Muirhead alongside Oakley, Ali Crawford, Miller and Blues as the second coming of the Gary Harkins 'quarterback' role. The underlying quality of the side was never good enough to carry that number of 'luxury' options off the ball - and they're not Mbappe when we do get it.
