Given the limits of our squad, you don't attempt an attacking 4-3-3 away to Aberdeen. Nouble at left wing was daft when McCrorie attacks so frequently and so well for Aberdeen from right back. It over-burdened Nouble defensively, neutering his impact. The midfield 3 had the wrong blend. Sean Kelly is fine in a slow tempo home match where he has time on the ball but he couldn't cope with the speed of play first half. Holt, by contrast, is great in a hectic midfield and should've started instead. Stephen Kelly needs ball winners around him to win the midfield battle and provide him a platform to play. Only Pittman in there trying to do that wasn't enough, again Holt was needed. Defensively, Sean Kelly is a holding anchor not a pressing ball winner like Holt is. Bradley is an "inverted winger", he only dribbles infield in possession, he never goes wide. Devlin is supposed to overlap to provide that wide right option but he was pinned back by the excellent Duk, first half. That left Bradley short on support in possession. Martindale again corrected for his mistakes at half time today, same as the ICT match, and both times Bradley has lost out from this. That's not ideal for a young player, obviously. I hope it doesn't happen again. The goal was that well-known confusion with the second phase of a corner where defenders don't know whether to push out or to continue marking their opponent. Obileye lost his header and whoever had been on Miovski let him go. Second half, if Nouble's cleared off the line attempt had instead gone in that'd have dispirited Aberdeen and picked up Livi. Get in their faces and beat them at their game. Not a classic (in fact it was brutal to watch if you were a purist) but if you keep the opposition to nil, you need one chance as Miovski showed today. Not a bad principle to be instilling in a team guilty of leaking goals. Robson has absolutely gone safety first in defence and that is good for me. Shinnie did a lot of good work in the middle, exactly what’s required for this type of game. Thought McKenzie had a good game, doesn’t get many plaudits.
