The Ton v Paul Hartley's Cove Rangers, 25-2-23

Recommended Posts

Left it late, but we deserved the three points. Best response to time-wasting I’ve seen since that Hamilton game here a while back! 😁

Shame Accies couldn’t keep their run up, but that apart it’s been a great round of results for us this weekend. Onward and upward!  👍👍👍

Absolutely tremendous to dig the win out having been 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go. It was one of those where you just have a feeling of inevitability: as soon as we equalised we were obviously going to win that game.

You've really seen the difference having a bench to use makes there. In pretty much every game prior to this weekend a triple sub could only have weakened us because of the lack of depth, but we have real options to change things now and all four subs were the correct ones.

Hope Mark Reynolds has a lovely Saturday evening.

In the end up we ground that result out. Missed chances in the 1st half and you hope it's not going to be one of those days.

2nd Half Cove kept their shape and made it difficult for us. Then they started the time wasting tactics that eventually came back to haunt them.

Great to have real options from the bench and in the end up we collected all 3 points.

Cove produced an almost perfect away team performance. They won the lion's share of first and second balls, gave us no time on the ball in their half of the pitch and were well-organised too. They did to us what we do to Dundee etc. on a regular basis. Our midfield was lacking in intensity - not for the first time in this type of game - and so we struggled.

The only thing Cove failed to do was to exploit our desperation in the second half to pick us off and get a second goal. They didn't actually manage a chance never mind convert one. That meant all it would take was a single error to level the game, and they duly delivered with a daft, obvious trip on Miller. Then a stramash (just like our only other big chance in the second half) coughed up a winner that we barely deserved. Huge relief and results going our way again to consolidate 4th - and kick on higher.

The added squad depth showed its worth today, even Ambrose coming on to play better passes out from the back and then attack the final balls towards the end helped us to get over the line.

We rode our luck, snatching a win from the jaws of defeat - but 100% fair play to Cove for making it so difficult for us as @virginton so eloquently expressed. This league's mental. Any team can seemingly beat any other on any given day - and for reasons unknown, Morton's jaw-dropping expertise at turning in outstanding performances beating the top 2 in the division on the bounce, and then struggling against the so-called 'lesser' teams, is arse-puckering in the extreme. Teams who don't actually appear to be 'lesser' at all, given the quality of much of Cove's output today. Maybe this emotional 'we're invincible one week then exposed and vulnerable the next' rollercoaster is exactly why this league's so compelling. But whatever - the surrounding results (including the Ayr/Raith debacle last night) worked in our favour, we finally have a full, good-quality bench with its associated options to change the team shape if needed, so 3 ground-out points - and overall, we're in a good place despite the sphincter-clenching display of today. Mon the Ton.

Will take that result and the 3 points. Imrie deserves credit for acting quickly to change the team and formation.

Funny didn't think it had been his forte.

But probably been conservative with a lack of suitable backup. Great to see his options improve and ability to change games what a difference a player makes.

If we’d came out of that with no points I wouldn’t really have any complaints, so delighted to snatch all three.

There was an inevitability to us grabbing the winner after the penalty which the team really have to be comended for.

Imrie highlighted it in his interview too, I thought Ambrose was a real difference maker today. Just playing slighter higher, and capable of spreading the ball into more threatening areas. A wee bit of a (controlled) chaos factor. I think that should be his role going forward.

The next 10 days probably define our season. Get out with 4 points and we are right in the hunt.

As expected it was a tough fixture, Cove set out a game plan that was working a treat but we really should have punished them in the 1st with the McGrattan sitter and Pignatiello's inability to master anything other than a powder puff delivery when getting into decent positions but as the half went on and Cove started to grind out some crosses into the box the goal came as no surprise, cracking heeder tbf! Massive credit to Dougie for the triple sub early in the 2nd which gave us that boost needed to open the game up a bit, once we got that goal I think almost all of us fully expected to charge on and get a winner. Ambrose coming on too and mopping up the back line to get us over the line was class too, some difference having a credible bench now.

Good to see another healthy crowd, utter scenes for the winner, cowshed was jumping and big shout out to the young team behind the goal, superb!

Would have bit your hand off for 6-7 points out of those 3 home games there, to get 9 is unreal, another massive 3 games coming up, this league is carnage but f*cking class!
