It hasn't quite been every year either - Celtic lost to Aberdeen in R5 in 2013/14, and Rangers lost to Dundee United in R5 in 2011/12 and 2012/13, then Raith in R5 in 2014/15. It's the Edinburgh derby numbers that are out of kilter, and I genuinely believe it might be because they are close to each other alphabetically (and therefore have nearby numbers) and the balls might not always get properly mixed in the earlier rounds.
