When I was younger, especially in my 20s and 30s, I was absolutely terrified of dying, I'd suddenly wake up bolt upright in my bed in a state of panic at the thought of dying. As I am getting older, in my 60s, and nearer to my inevitable death, somehow, inexplicably, I am less afraid of dying than before.

I don't think that I am embracing death, just accepting it.

Now, my ambition is to die in bed at the age of 90, shot by a jealous husband.

I am not bothered about being dead. I’ll be dead and will have absolutely no knowledge of it.

I am more worried about the variety of ways that I come to be dead though.

Scared of death? No, as I believe in the afterlife.

Scared of the manner I'm going to die? Absolutely.

Aye I think some folk are either talking shite or just getting the wording wrong in here. This is it for me. Death itself doesn't really bother me as I'll be unaware of it. But the thought of dying the now obviously scares me. I'm 33, I don't want to die just now so do my best to keep myself alive. As does almost everyone. The human body is literally programmed to do this as best it can. The same folk saying they aren't scared of dying, presumably never visit a doctor when they're unwell or find a lump etc.

Yes, I'm being pedantic.

FWIW @DA Baracus, have you watched the White Christmas episode of Black Mirror. Give that a go for another similar mind f**k

To me It's an absolute mindfuck. I know that folk say that before you were born there was nothing and after you die there will be nothing, but it's just so hard to get your mind around it, or at least for me it is.

I cannot comprehend an eternity of nothingness, of never existing ever again. My mind cannot get it, I can't understand the reality of it.

Therefore I answer 'yes' to the thread title.

I used to be pretty bad for this in my 20s and it used to effect me lying in bed at night where my brain would rotate it over and over to the point it would mean I wouldn't sleep all night. It honestly petrified me, and the thought of nothingness is horrendous but in a similar way to you I don't believe in any god or afterlife so logically my brain knows that nothingness is the probable outcome.

I dont suffer as much with it these days and found coping mechanisms for sleeping to take my mind off it which has helped allot.

I'd guess a fair amount of those who don't visit a doctor as you mention are afraid of dying and prefer to avoid knowing what's going on.

Long time listener, first time caller.

The thing that fries my nut is not getting to know how things pan out after you've gone. Not even in a sentimental way about your family or friends. Just not knowing what happens to your team, how technology evolves, how much further Mars bars shrink by 2099 etc. You spend your life investing your interest in people, things, hobbies and after you die, that's it; you're cut off forever and you will never get to know what happens next. Its like getting a book and you're only allowed to read the first half. You think about people that died, and the things that happened after they died that they have no concept of and it seems mental, unfair almost. For example Brain Clough's entire life revolved around football, one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of the sport, but he died in 2004 and did not get to experience the Messi and Ronaldo era.

Death itself, not arsed.  I'd like to have some notice though, get your affairs in order. Dying suddenly and having to have folk root about your house cleaning it, rifling through your stuff? A grim state of affairs.

I have a friend exactly like this. She's very unwell and won't go to find out what it is.

I'm not afraid of dying but at the same time I would always go to the doctor. I can't see how you're able to compare the scenarios!

A Doctor was doing a talk to a group of female OAP's and at the end did a Q&A.

Dictor was asked "what will it be like dying of old age ?"

He replied "you will increase week on week the amount of time you spend sleeping, you lose energy, you lose interest and eventually one day you fall asleep and never wake up.  It's a peaceful way to go"

...........hope he wasn't telling porkies.

Considered this statement and then broke out laughing at how expensively different the potential meaning is in todays society…

That's just mental behaviour. If you want to continue to live you surely do everything you can to do so. Not visiting specialists when you're unwell just doesn't compute with me.

Nope, we're all going to die, it's silly being scared of something inevitable. I'm scared of feeling terrible and in pain, tubed up in hospital with no control. That's why I'd always see a doctor if I thought there was something wrong, catch most things early and you can avoid horrible complications.

Scared of death and scared of dying are different things though.

There are things far worse than dying though and as someone said above, we treat our pets better in certain situations. That's an entirely different discussion I suppose.

If my missus never became pregnant 8 years ago I wouldn't be here right now.  I have 3 life changing illnesses and I don't take any of them seriously.  I'm not yet 30 and I doubt I'll see 2030.

Be class if I could come back as a dog when it does happen.

This is how I get over my fear of it and where my belief in reincarnation comes from.

If you can ultimately come from nothing, then there's no reason to assume it can't simply happen again.
