Glasgow Gretna myth …busted!

Recommended Posts

Who knows how this will all pan out, but might as well enjoy the fck out of it while it lasts. We’re flying on the park, Coyle has taken a decent bunch of young players from a bang average L1 team to top of the championship playing some excellent stuff.

The behind the scenes (football) side and youth set up seems pretty solid. If that’s yer business model then elite level in the academy seems like a good idea - better that than signing a bunch of expensive haddies like O.G.renta did.

Just a shame the club have arsed up the chance to add to the fan base while we’ve been winning the last couple of years. Lesser might eventually be a decent stadium. It might even be a reasonable income stream. But it’s been an utter shambles of a development. 3 years and still doesn’t look close to ready or fit for purpose.

Fingers crossed we get decent pies though. And if we do want to start with expensive transfers, let’s start by bringing in  the lassie who makes the soup at Stenny.

Best team in the league so far and rightly topping the league, fair fucks to them. Plenty have wasted such investment with no return.

As for delaying the completion of their own ground or striking a deal to move OF to Hampden GTF. Especially when success is in part built on the sale of Hampden.

No where near a level playing if 1 team can secure such gates when they don't have stadium capacity.

That's probably one of the reasons the rules don't allow it.

Some Queen's Park fans are fundamentally misunderstanding what people are getting at with the Gretna comparison. Willie Haughey is clearly not Brooks Mileson, as he's considerably wealthier and the money available to be ploughed into a Scottish club is pretty much a bottomless pit for Haughey whereas Mileson was never going to be able to sustain it. Queen's Park are also making serious investment in off-field infrastructure alongside their first team expenditure (notwithstanding making a complete arse of the stadium), something Gretna never bothered to do. Although it's worth nothing that Gretna did also chuck money at youth development, albeit as a PR and poaching fans from QoS exercise rather than seriously giving players a pathway. Evidently there are differences.

None of that changes the similarities to Gretna. Having other expenditure that you hope can be a route to long-term sustainability as well as the first team expenditure doesn't change the fundamental fact that the first team squad is being extensively bankrolled. That Haughey’s wealth means it's extremely unlikely to end in liquidation as Gretna did doesn't mean being bankrolled up the leagues with a Premiership budget in the first place is actually any different. There's also an aside there about how credible it is for Queen's Park to grow their support to an extent that Premiership wages will ever be sustainable, even if they had actually managed to build a stadium large enough to hold that size of support.

Queen's Park fans have consistently argued that they are well aware of the level of spending, are under no illusions about the reality of it and are just enjoying seeing where it takes them. Absolutely, every fanbase would love seeing their club throwing the same sums of money around and would be enjoying the success on the park the same way, while to some (mostly lesser) extent every single club in this division has at times lived outwith their means, including many doing so just now.

Every time one of your fans reacts furiously to the Gretna comparison though it tells the rest of us that particular fan is actually in total denial about being bankrolled. If you want to enjoy the journey and see where it takes you go ahead and enjoy it, but needing to start a thread as you feel compelled to try to dispel a "myth" which is self-evidently true suggests that you are in fact extremely rattled by others pointing out the reality of the situation. If you're happy to see your team being bankrolled in this way, and you'll struggle to find many fans of any club who wouldn't be, then you need to accept the inevitable and entirely justified Gretna comparison that comes with it.

Willie Haughey is a stand up guy, just ask Dominic Keane and John McGuiness.

If Haughey removed his funding one way or another tomorrow, would Queens Park survive anywhere near this level?

If the answer is no, then you should be concerned about how the club is being ran. Having a new stadium (Clyde/Stirling Albion/Airdrie) doesn’t mean good attendances and sustainable full time football. Having a winning team due to punching out your weight category (Livingston/Dundee/Gretna) doesn’t mean sustainability.
Dundee, Morton and Thistle have big enough support to sustain a mid to top Championship team.
Arbroath have a part time team and a thriving hospitality that allows them to compete in the league, the increase in fan base last season could have turned them full time or at least hybrid but the long term future of the club was more important.

Ayr, Inverness and Raith have both struggled for the last decade to combine full time football and keeping the lights on, while trying to compete at a level their fan base should sustain them at.
Ayr are investing in capital projects that are designed to grow the club. If Smith walked away tomorrow, it is unlikely we would have a new stand  but the club would operate around the same level it does now. This has only happened in the last 3 years, with a team that has a hardcore support that can range between 1500 and 2500 a season depending on the team on the park.

With a stadium with such a low capacity, would premier league crowds and the increase in money from playing in the league above make you a sustainable concern at the same operating level without a “sugar-daddy” owner?

Pretty good post. I personally see no good reason to start this thread as a QP fan, fans will see: wee team, spending money, having success and immediately make Gretna comparisons. Personally I think it is a wee bit lazy but I accept that it is the natural comparison until proven otherwise by the club. That's the way it goes. There's nothing we can say about building a sustainable future that is going to change that.

A few things I would like to pick up on though. I actually don't think our first team playing budget is as big as a lot are making out. Do people think we are spending over Dundee & Thistle levels? I think Coyle, Murray, Thomas will be on a good wage but a lot of these guys I honestly don't think it'll be anything ridiculous.

Let's not forget that 7 of Saturday's starters came 4th in league 1 last year. What's happened here is the club has progressed on field at a faster rate than anyone inside or outside of the club wished or even hoped for. Off field we are playing catch up and will continue to play catch up until we have a home in the southside.

Why start this thread…it was always going one way

The state of some though who are begging for the club to collapse is a bit of a riddy

I never noticed any posts like that.

Certainly the squad isn't one that you look at and immediately conclude it's an obviously superior squad to others on paper, so Coyle does deserve an enormous amount of credit for the improvement on last season.

I would say though that finishing 4th in League One behind Airdrie and Montrose with a similar squad is as much of an indictment on Laurie Ellis and the months long caretaker management situation of last season as it is a positive of Coyle. I'd be very surprised if Queen's Park weren't in the top three spenders in the division along with Dundee and Partick.

Gretna was an eccentric man taking advantage of a gullible village team. QP however seems very different?

Mind the gap.
