Greenock Morton vs Ayr United

Recommended Posts

That's the worst we've been in a long time.

Still yet to see anything from Miller that justifies his selection over Lewis McGrattan tbh. Could easy criticise Schwake, Efe, Waters, Blues, and Muirhead tonight as well right enough, and am absolutely howling appearance from Grant Gillespie.

An off night all round tbh.

Very few pass marks for anyone tonight. Maybe Efe was our best player and he was bang average.

Ayr had a game plan and it worked for them. We were just not at the races at all.

We had no width in the game and missed Jai. We decided to lump balls up the park and made McGinty look like a superstar as he won header after header. Then he scores with a header with no one near him.

Tactics didn't work tonight and Dougie just didn't seem to be able to change it.

We're not going to win every game but to get beat in that fashion makes it all the more hard to take.

We're still in the hunt for the playoff's and we know this team has the fight in them to come back.

Roll on Saturday!

McGinty getting a Goal, Assist and Assist the Assister for the third, man had the whole of Morten in his back pocket

Secondary assist.

It's a tracked stat in the NHL, and I'd assume McGinty would have a lot of them with the hoofball for someone to layoff Dipo

Would rather see those stats than the fact that Ashford ran 14.4km and had a 93.7% attack zone rating

With Miller wide on the left? That's not a diamond, that's suicide.

We only went to the formation that finished on Saturday in the 63rd minute.

Over the last two games, we've lined up like that for approx. 75 minutes: aggregate score 2-0.

We've played approx. 105 minutes with Muirhead, Oakley, Miller, and A. Crawford all on the pitch (and Blues deepest in midfield): aggregate score 1-5.

It really isn't difficult.

That formation continued to be a riot with McGrattan and Gillespie on the park. I fully agree that there's no way you can accommodate all four of them in the same team - two maximum - but it would have been considerably less shite and more of a challenge for Ayr to play through us to have those same players as the front four in a 4-2-3-1 .

The actual nick of the wee jakebaw in the chinos. Morton celebrating the "gaffer didn't shake Sean McGintys hand cos he has scored and assisted and rattled us so much" trophy is astonishing  🤣🤣🤣

Dougie Imrie in being a greeting faced loser shocker.

Being incredibly generous here but he’s possibly playing up to his thicko supporters to draw attention away from his team shitting the bed.

Still a complete riddy.

Of course he is.  Imagine the exact opposite scenario at Somerset where ex Ayr skipper Jack Baird has scored, assisted and back pocketed our main striker. At full time Bullen runs on to the park, makes a massive show of refusing to shake Bairds hand and then hilariously "gets him telt" by sticking the fingers up at him on his way past before soaking up the applause from the fans on the North Terrace, who no longer care about the result cos of the absolute PATTER.     Diddy team

You are free to wind up your old teams fans providing you do not meet these 3 criteria: you’re having a shite game, you’re getting beat and you were rancid at said team.

Mcginty only meets 1 therefore he is free to do so. Baird comfortably meets all 3 therefore he was rightfully laughed down the tunnel.

Totally agree we should be lining up 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, but the 4-4-2 as a plan C can work if the right players are in the right positions. And 4-3-3 doesn't work if the wrong players are in the wrong positions: a. you just can't ask Blues to sit, because he's not capable of controlling a game and it leaves Robbie Crawford to do the impossible; b. said before the game I'd be a lot less confident if Imrie persisted with Muirhead wide right... and look what happens.

Imrie was a left-sided player who played on the right and he's making the utterly ridiculous error of imagining that a guy with Muirhead's attitude (and running power) can do something even remotely similar.

He's got a lot of credit in the bank, but unbalancing the team to try and get what he thinks are our 'best' players all on at the same time has got to stop. Before Saturday, or we can wave goodbye to a play-off. Only thing I can say in his defence is that having Quitongo back would make things a lot simpler for him.

What did Jack Baird do like?

Very frustrating that. Dougie knew it didn't work on Sat and went with it again,l. It needs to go back to a 433/4231 which involves one of Muirhead and Oakley up top, not both and certainly not Muirhead out wide. The lack of pace without Quitongo is concerning.

First half I felt we unlucky to go in 2 down, was a pretty even game, Ayr took most of their chances, whereas our finishing was poor. Oakley needs to score at 1-1.

Second half was awful from our perspective. Ayr knew exactly how to play us and could and really should have picked us off.  No thought process, just shell the ball up and feed off the scraps. Unfortunately the Ayr defence won everything and our midfield was all over the place. The Efe long throw can get in the sea, brutal.

Dougie got it wrong tonight, hope he doesn't make the same mistake on Saturday.

Title challenge over, need to make sure we don't drift away from top 4 after being in them most of the season.

Good crowd for a freezing midweek game. Performance won't exactly encourage them back.

Took in the game as a neutral.

Have watched Morton a few times on BBC Shortbreid in Imrie's time and been impressed but they were miles off it all over the park tonight.

Liam Grimshaw is never a full back. Often shunted there at Motherwell just by virtue of being a hard worker, but Morton needed him in the middle tonight as they were second to everything that dropped in there.

No width at all, don't remember a Morton player hitting the byline. Persisted with hoofball which McGinty hoovered up. A bad night at the office overall.

Ayr look a very tidy side. Akinyemi and Maguire look like a great pairing and was impressed to see Maguire play the full 90 minutes at that intensity, had assumed he'd be struggling for fitness.

Next four league games for Ayr look huge with very winnable games against Accies, Arbroath and Cove along with a big away trip to Dundee. The league doesn't look beyond the realms of possibility just yet.
