This weekend mini-tournament ran briefly in early 1990s being held on Palmerston Park in Dumfries. Border was interpreted liberally as Albion Rovers and Preston NE featured.

Anybody got missing details; and did it run longer?

I've got programmes for 1992 and 1993 but not 1991. Not sure how I missed the 91 one. I was at all three tourneys.

We lost to Albion Rovers on penalties in the 93 semi final (can't recall the drawn match score). Pretty sure we finished 3rd but can't recall who we played. I may be able to find out more though.

It didn't run again after 1993. It was effectively replaced later by the Scottish Brewers Cup which ran down at Annan Athletic for a few years, involving initially ourselves, Annan, Stranraer and Ayr. And later versions of it included Kilmarnock and Livingston. Then far more recently a new Borders Cup thing was played at Gretna under the name Raydale Cup. Think we won the first two of those also.

From memory I don't think it's so much that it was "interpreted liberally" as that Carlisle and Berwick declined invitations for the 2nd one and so Gretna filled in and Preston were invited as a bigger name to replace Carlisle. There is a little bit of history with Preston who also opened the new floodlights at Palmerston several decades ago. By the 3rd one it was just a case of finding someone else of League standard who would play hence Albion Rovers.

Retrospectively it seems slightly odd that Annan never played in it but Annan were an East of Scotland side at the time and it was never intended to be a non league team tournament as such. Gretna at the time were a reasonably successful Northern Premier League Club in England and had reached the FA Cup 1st round recently. They were well above the level of other potential Borders non League sides such as Annan, Dalbeattie, Threave, etc.

Had a tidy up at the weekend and found the programmes for these games, googled for info and found this thread, from my memory:

The 1992 tournament, Stranraer/Gretna was on Thursday 23rd, QOS/PNE was Friday 24th, there was a last minute goal in that one possibly a QOS winner and the 3/4 and final were on Saturday 25th.

1993, sure it was QOS 1 Albion Rovers 1, Albion won on penalties.  Andy Cook scored for QOS and Tommy Bryce played for Albion and scored in the penalty shoot out, he re-signed for QOS a couple of weeks later

Stranraer 3 Gretna 0, QOS 2 Albion 2 - Albion won on penalties, 3/4 QOS 3 Gretna 2, Final Stranraer 3 Albion 2.

Wonder if Stranraer still have the Trophy?
