German coup attempt

News coming out overnight that around 50 people have been arrested in Germany, allegedly for planning a coup.  The group was lead by a German aristocrat Heinreich XIII and planned to storm the Reichstag and seize power.  It's alleged that the group has stashed weapons to prepare for the coup.  Fromer members of the military were allegedly involved, including former members of elite special forces units.  A former AfD member of Parliament is also understood to be involved.  The AfD is a far right party who emerged in the mid-late 2010s and secured around 10% of the vote in German elections, campaigning against immigration and adopting nationalist and anti-Islamic positions.

There have been significant scandals in Germany involving the KSK, which is the German equivelent of the SAS.  In 2017 several soldiers were arrested for plotting to assassinate a number of left-wing politicians and activists - there were significant rumours then that the plotters included KSK soldiers.  In 2020, one of the KSK companies was disbanded due to it being so filled with extremists.  That unit was adjudged to have essentially become independent of the chain of command.

Obviously this conspiracy wasn't going to overthrow the German government but it's worth noting that it seems a serious issue.  Even if the idea itself is mad, if you have groups of highly trained military running around with weapons there is a big risk of violence.

Hey what happened to "Have any P&B posters been involved in a plot to overthrow a democratically elected government?"

It would be nice to be asked.

I didn't want to out the secret group of esoteric right-wing posters who are currently plotting to seize Holyrood.

The AfD member is a former member of parliament who is currently serving as a judge in Berlin.

Heinrich XIII is reported to have reached out to representatives of Russia for assistance in the coup attempt - it's not known what the Russian representatives said, I imagine something like "we are a bit busy Heinrich".

German authorities are saying that some of the plotters were inspired by QAnon and were part of a kind of German soveriegn citizens group who didn't recognise the current German state as legitimate.

The far-right scum are never far away but when I read about incidents like this and add it to others that have been very visible recently, I'm getting increasingly concerned. I know that Kanye West is severely troubled but any attempts to legitimise far-right/Nazi ideology has to be countered asap.
