I think it's a wee bit more complex than that.
3 at the back copes better against a press when we have two ball playing/carrying centre halves either side of a Hanley type in the centre.

we played three centre halves against Ukraine in the play-off. McTominay and Cooper either side of Hanley. Ukraine high-pressed, didn't give us a second on the ball, we got pumped. Cooper is assured on the ball and of course McTominay plays there because if his passing ability.

we played three centre halves with McKenna and Hendry either side of Hanley in our next game. Ireland high-pressed and we again got pumped.

A contributing factor is that Gordon is not good enough in his distribution to assist defenders when we try and pass our way around a high press.

As said, next time we play that formation and a team elect to high press, it will be interesting to see how we manage to cope.

Another contributing factor was that the defence didn't contain Kieran Tierney, probably our best player.

I see only Tierney, McTominay and Hendry as our true ball carriers. Cooper is a good defender but offers no route out of defence other than long/high passes, and I think that contributed a lot to the Ukraine collapse. McKenna lies somewhere in between.

Cooper can offer a ball, but it has to be a simple ball slid out wide to an offering full back/winger who's dropped back. If that option is covered he's either going to go back across with a square pass or hit it long.

A bizarre game all round, this. One of those games where it seems like hardly anyone is even aware that it's happening, and will be forgotten by almost everyone who has watched it by the weekend.

Think if it wasn’t on Sky, I wouldn’t have bothered myself.

We deserve to be about 4-0 down so far, the midfield is posted missing and we don't appear to have any sort of game plan or tactics at all.

If you didn't know better you'd think we were down to nine men.....

Not watching to know who you mean, but Cooper isn’t in the squad.
