Technically any player with a British passport who hasn't already played a senior game for another association can play for us. FIFA rules simply state that players must be citizens. It's up to individual associations if they wish place additional criteria on top of that to make it fit their idea of representation. the UK home nations are in a somewhat unique position as there's no legal way of defining who is a Scot or Englishman so we have our granny rules to draw lines on who qualifies. worth noting that many other countries don't give a f**k, you've got naturalized players who often came to that country to play for a club turning out for the national team after a fast tracked application for citizenship. some have family connections like Jorginho others have nothing at all like Brazilian Eduardo da silva playing for Croatia

The short answer however, is no they can't

What are our naturalisation rules for footballers these days anyway?

In Championship Manager 01/02, I remember Rolando Zarate would usually become eligible to play for Scotland not long after the game started, which was a bit weird considering he'd only just arrived in the country IRL. Programming glitch, I assume.

None of this is correct. The FIFA rules have a specific distinction for the UK nations which require players to have been born in the country, or have a parent or grandparent born in the country, or have been educated in the country for at least 5 years.

That’s a bit crap for us. Other countries benefit from residency rules and we do not.

I wonder if Scottish independence would negate the need for the so called gentleman’s agreement that’s now an actual rule

Yes, that's the whole point of the rule. Scottish (or English or Welsh) citizenship doesn't exist, so there needs to be a specific rule. If Scotland became a normal country then the normal country rules would apply to us just as they do with, for example, Ireland.

Ireland gets special rules where they get to pick n.Irish players too.   Independent Scotland should try to get a similar agreement with someone like Brazil or Argentina.

I’m assuming that’s to do with anyone born on the island of Ireland being eligible for Irish citizenship, rather than some FIFA loophole.

And my point is that Doncaster is still part off Scotland as my link shows anybody that can be bothered to watch it

So these players may indeed be eligible to play for Scotland and more importantly anybody with Dincaster born parents or Grand parents which opens the net up even further

I see Louis Tomlinson is from Doncaster. Worth a callup maybe? He has considerable experience with Doncaster reserves and has played in several charity matches. Would bring good publicity and increase shirt sales too.

Kevin Keegan too perhaps? A bit past his best but surely Scotland can't turn down a striker of that quality, a two time Ballon d'Or winner at that.

Weren't all the boomers supposed to have bred a new generation of Scottish-Argentinian talent during the 1978 World Cup? So much for the attractiveness/fertility of Scotland's men.

Also: fuckin' Dryhorce, man
