Why would they check something like a direct free kick?

It may well have been given as a penalty but the assistant put his flag up and Clancy then gave an IDFK (for offside) - so without VAR it would still be offside.

I can’t think of any reason why a direct free kick would ever be overruled by VAR. 
 

With a penalty they’re usually looking for encroachment or the keeper off his line.
