"The notion of the royal family as symbols of duty or sacrifice to the nation is “a lie” and is at the centre of a deeply unequal UK, a senior Labour MP has argued, breaching Keir Starmer’s order to his party to stay silent before the Queen’s funeral on Monday.

Clive Lewis, the Norwich South MP and former shadow cabinet minister, said the arrest of anti-monarchy protesters and the condemnation of others who dissented showed that the royal succession “is as much about coercion as consent”.

It will be one of these instances where you barely know of anyone who is actually watching it but it will be reported as the biggest TV audience in history. Smashing all previous records into oblivion.

They’re doing it already. Various media outlets are saying 4.1 billion people will be watching. There are only around 1.7 billion TVs on the planet. They’re therefore claiming - and no one is questioning it - that more than half the world’s population will be watching, and every single TV will be tuned in to the funeral live.

That’s the state of the media in this country.

"King Charles has said he has a personal “duty to protect the diversity of our country”, in a meeting with 30 faith leaders at Buckingham Palace.

He said that as sovereign he believes his work must include “protecting the space for faith itself” and the valued differences which people live by.

According to PA Media, the monarch said: “I have always thought of Britain as a ‘community of communities’.

“That has led me to understand that the sovereign has an additional duty – less formally recognised but to be no less diligently discharged.

“It is the duty to protect the diversity of our country, including by protecting the space for faith itself and its practise through the religions, cultures, traditions and beliefs to which our hearts and minds direct us as individuals.”

"The Queen’s courtiers banned “coloured immigrants or foreigners” from serving in clerical roles in the royal household until at least the late 1960s, according to newly discovered documents that will reignite the debate over the British royal family and race.

The documents also shed light on how Buckingham Palace negotiated controversial clauses – that remain in place to this day – exempting the Queen and her household from laws that prevent race and sex discrimination."

A bit heavy on the word “duty”, a bit light on explaining what “protecting” faiths and “discharging that duty” actually involves.

Is he going to be diligently speaking out about Catholicism and Islam? Intervening to protect churches from closure? Doing absolutely f**k all whilst his use of the word “duty” is simply taken and run with by the press, who can present him as a liberal protector of all God botherers?

I get your general point, but the idea that you can only watch something on a TV is pretty dated.

Apparently the 4.1 billion figure is traceable only as far back as a “TV analyst” for the Daily Star. It’s made-up. 4.1 out of 7.5 billion people on the planet, we can be sure, will not be watching this funeral (on TVs, laptops, or on any other devices).

Tabloids did the same thing at the royal weddings - billions upon billions would be watching live. They didn’t, of course - but the lie was already in print and online. It had become a fact.

My mum is no longer eating or drinking. Probably living the dream for her as she’s existing solely on morphine but you can’t carry on like that for long. I could probably set up a coffin for her in my lock up and charge folk to visit if they want to skip the queues and get to see another old lady, boxed up, that they’ve never met.

Sorry man. Glad she's on the good stuff.

Is anyone actually bothering to watch the funeral on Monday??

Yes. If people like it or not, history is happening. Do you really want to say that you never saw it? There is not one person alive just now that will ever see another queen on the throne

A funeral isn't really much of a historical event is it? Can't remember a single royal funeral in any history books. A faor few deaths right enough, but we already missed seeing that.

You'll all be sorry when ZomBrenda bursts out of the coffin and you miss it because you thought you had more important and interesting things to do, like...well, just about anything.

It really bugs me that anything David Chuffing Beckham says or does is treated as news by the BBC. They even reported in 2014 when he added his incoherent, squeaky-voiced tuppenceworth on an independence referendum in a country that wasn't his.

You can be enjoying a tennis match at Wimbledon any year but the BBC will spoil it for you by cutting to his grinning, uncomprehending boat race if it arrives in the expensive seats.

And today he appears in THE QUEUE. And the BBC reverently carries the squeaky voice telling us 'a fing like this is meant to be shared togevva' and 'it was important to come ere wiv the family'. No sign of his dreary missus, but.

They're probably including the woman who saw the coffin 7 times in Edinburgh.

I get thr historical side of it, as it is indeed a huge historical event, but watching it sounds boring as f**k.

For that reason, and a few others, I won't be tuning in.

Well yes, history happens all the time, that's what history is. Today history will be made as Thistle play Cove in a Championship match for the first time. Do you really want to say that you never saw it?

There are two answers to that

1) hopefully as there will be a republic and there will be no kings or queens any more

2) a Bairn born yesterday could outlive Prince George, the future George VII, and George might only have daughters as George VI did
