NINE clubs fielded ineligible players opening day

Recommended Posts

I know Kilwinning has been the centre of attention on this, and heard some other clubs get mentioned. Didn't realise it was as many as nine though.

A staggering nine clubs fielded ineligible players on the opening day of the West of Scotland League season, Ayrshire Live can reveal.

Seven were hit with three-point deductions and fines of £100 while the remaining two - including Kilwinning Rangers - were admonished due to mitigating circumstances.

West of Scotland League (WoSFL) General Secretary John Dalton lifted the lid on the scale of the problem in response to a query from Ayrshire Football News.

He wouldn't name clubs due to rules surrounding the appeals process but admitted it appeared to be an issue confined solely to the West region.

Dalton said that of the aforementioned nine cases, some were due to player suspensions - particularly those carried over from last season including new signings - through to clubs fielding too many trialists.

But he added: "I cant speculate on the reasons why this has happened. Each case will have different circumstances but it does appear to be a particular problem for the WoSFL clubs. The East of Scotland, South of Scotland and the Scottish Lowland Football Leagues do not have the same problem and they use the same SFA disciplinary system and processes as WoSFL clubs.

At the start of last season there was a zoom meeting with the SFA Disciplinary Dept to which all clubs attended and the various processes, such as where to check if a player is suspended, was explained. Clubs were invited to attend a similar meeting the week before this season started and again these processes were explained. At these meetings the Scottish FA made the offer to clubs that if they were unsure whether any player, particularly any new signings, was suspended then they could e-mail the SFA Disciplinary Dept who would advise accordingly.

The WoSFL is still a new league. This is only the start of our second full season but ultimately it is the responsibility of clubs to ensure that they check and understand the processes and adhere to the WoSFL constitution. The League do not wish to sanction clubs but the rules have to be adhered to. Hopefully, the problem has now abated as there have been no new cases in the intervening period but at our October General Meeting of all clubs, we are hoping to have the SFA Disciplinary Dept in attendance to discuss issues surrounding discipline."

This professional league is quite an amateur set up.

The sfa issue a list of player suspensions if your name is on it no matter who you played for well your suspended it’s the SFA who administer the suspensions. I just can’t understand why a club should find the need to keep checking a players suspension they know who is suspended because it’s under the wrong team. It’s still the same player no matter who he played with or now plays with. Also when it’s being suggested to you to cancel a suspended players registration to play as a trialist as suspension doesn’t count as a trialist and resign him later I think that says it all

Either the West website has the tables incorrect or Cumbernauld, Whitletts, Ardeer, Dalry and Newmains are some of the teams who've been hit by points deductions.

Ardeer played someone who was still registered to his previous club - they didn't check the SFA database.

Dalry played too many trialists as they assumed two of their Under 20s had been registered

Whitletts also played someone who was on the suspension list in the first game.

No news about Cumbernauld and Newmains (the latter have not had a player listed in the suspensions list until last week).

Arthurlie played someone who was on the suspension list in the first game (not yet reflected in the league table).

Kilwinning did the same though were not sanctioned after being told by the SFA they didn't have any suspended players. Wonder who the other club is?

Muirkirk and Rob Roy each played a suspended player in the South Challenge Cup (obviously didn't check the SCC section of the suspensions list)

I don't know how you'd do it if checking on a phone/tablet, but on a PC, Ctrl F and put in your own clubs name and then see how many times the name comes up (for different sections)..........then do the same for that week's opposition to see if they have any suspended. 😀

There'll be a find/search function on any phone/tablet PDF viewer. Someone at each club - even a fan - should at least have a check of the list just before the game.

Even if there was a spelling mistake in a player or team name which meant a suspension wasn't picked up, clubs should really be doing a thorough check by searching for player IDs at the start of the season as well.

I'm told the Premier table hasn't been adjusted yet as Arthurlie have appealed their 3 points deduction and fine.

I gathered that, though not sure what their defence is going to be to get off with it...

They sent an email or was a trialist should do it.

Maybe we are taking advice on how to play suspended players and get away with it from a man in the know. FPF
