Things You Learned Today

Pilots and the likes largely develop that "the time sponsored by Accurist is..." type accent because they spend so much time communicating using 'radio English' (that requires talking in an overly clear and concise manner").

And Aoife.

I used to work alongside both a Niamh and an Aoife (ee-fuh), and I have a cousin called Saorsa (ser-sha).

Could have been me.

Old English had a letter that looked a bit like a "p" called Thorn which stood for "th". Icelandic I think still has the letter. Typesetters substituted the letter y for thorn as it was the closest looking letter in the Latin alphabet

The Scots surname Menzies is pronounced properly "Mingiss" as the Z stands in for a letter in Old Scots called "yogh"

"Things you learned last year" thread for this p**h, but when reading old documents from the 1700s, I quickly picked up on the 'long s' that took the place of today's lower case s... unless it was a double-s, in which case it was a long-s followed by a normal s.  🤔

One day I'll also learn how to read more than one page at a time before replying.

About a month ago I realised that a line in Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" is "they set you on the treadmill", not the "they said you are the treadmill" that I've thought for about the last 3 decades.
I honestly don't think this is the thread for you mate.

I think I've run out of idiocy for now.

Just learned that Atalanta also play in blue and black stripes.

Unfortunately it took until an hour into the current match I'm watching in the background to realise that Inter Milan aren't the ones playing in that colour.

"Eh? 1-1? Shirley 2-0?" 😵💫
