What businesses will die?

Recommended Posts

We went in to a pub in Hamburg that was basically just a bookies, ordered a round of beers that were covered in dust and I had to relieve myself in a shitter that made the one in Trainspotting look heavenly. There was one other patron apart from us and he clearly wasn't in for a bevvy. Horrid

Alcohol & gambling are a terrible combination, any casino I’ve been to in the US, provide free drinks as long as you are active at a table whether that be craps, roulette poker etc. The casinos aren’t doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, drunk people lose more money, simply that.
Bookies & pubs should be kept separate to protect people from themselves.

The very reason bookies will try and locate themselves next to a pub.

They always seem to be located next to Chinese / Indian takeaways too.  Must be a link between the consumption of rice and negative gambling habits.

Hamburg was the wrong side of the seedy/edgy line for me. Didn't like it there.

Such a shame.

A 40 year old business on the verge of closing down.

Over sheer, naked greed.

This is going to be a recurring theme.

ETA. That tweet was 8 days ago. The business closes down today. Last day of trading.

Isn't that the same takeaway that it transpired was an estimated bill and, once a reading was provided, it dropped by £9,500?

I saw a clip of James O’ Brien a couple of days ago & up until that point I had no realisation that business energy costs are not capped by Ofgem, indeed, not capped at all!
The caller owned a family chip shop (55 years in the family) & his supplier wasn’t renewing his fixed rate - I can’t remember the exact details but previously he had been on 3-4p per unit, his new tariff was 50p per unit! The guy said he would have to close the doors at least 4 days per week & need to cut the hours for his 10 staff.
Transpires the guy had voted Tory in the last two elections but vowed he would never vote Tory again. I’m not sure whether I feel sorry for the guy (I certainly feel sorry for his employees) or it’s just a case of voting for the face eating Leopard party, until they actually start eating your face!

Betting machines in pubs sounds like an absolutely dreadful idea.

Vegas is basically one big version of that.

So a dreadful idea, then.

It does make me expect to see a video poker machine or one-armed bandit on the back of the bathroom stall door when it closes in Vegas eventually. I’m sure it’s somehow related to age restrictions, but for the bathrooms within the age restricted casino areas, I’m sure they’re trying to figure a way to do it.

This will be a great opportunity for corporations to take over the function of any traditional small businesses that require premises and haven't been forced out already.

Elsewhere, I reckon we'll see more charities closing down their shops after this winter, and withdrawing from retail altogether. Many of the smaller charities are grinding money out already, and extra heating/lighting costs will make the less-profitable outlets untenable - some have already been operating without heating for years to save money. The larger charities will be able to take advantage and increase their prices without the worry of competition. f**k knows how they'll cope with the increase in donations, though.

So, the folk who bitterly complain about the number of charity shops in their town will be able to look at even more empty outlets instead. Truly a golden age for the High Street!

I've seen absolutely nothing to suggest this. The thread you're replying to there doesn't suggest it, the article on the BBC (which includes quotes from the energy providers themselves) doesn't suggest it, and the place has had to shut down.

If a "popular" takeaway has had to close because it faced a utility bill of £4,500-£6,000 per quarter (approx £375-£500 per week*) that tends to suggest the business isn't in the best shape tbh.

That he also appears to have not bothered renewing his contract at any point since the previous one expired 4 years ago is also not a mistake one would expect an experienced and organised business owner to make.

Digging deeper, it would appear that the overall difference to the business on this new contract he was offered (but appears to have decided against in favour of closing) is £16k over the year, a significant amount on paper, yes, but one which would be significantly, if not wholly, covered by adding 50p - £1 onto each dish.

In short, if Mr Tang really wanted to keep his takeaway open, he could do so.

There is clearly more to this story than first made out.

*£375 will be around one hours takings on a busy day.
