On paper the hope would have been for 3 or 4 sides to make it through to R3, but given the draw that seemed a tall order. Not tall enough, though: as 3 outstanding performances saw Linlithgow, Sauchie and Dunipace (who'd twice trailed) join Hill of Beath in progressing, on an outstanding day for the East of Scotland League. Observe both Sauchie and Dunipace lanced sides 2 tiers above them in the league system.

Having taken an early lead Dunbar were ultimately unable to join them. Camelon took a heavy beating.

Interesting chaser: there are 3x Highland clubs in R3... 3x Lowland... 3x West of Scotland (with Pollok still to play tbf)... but 4x East of Scotland. Quite outstanding.


As well as pocketing around £10,000 in prizemoney - there are many potential big names awaiting in Monday's draw... including Dundee, Dunfermline, Inverness, Morton, Queen's Park plus Partick:

Saw a compelling but tense tie at Prestonfield where Linlithgow's penalty proved enough as they kept out battling Sauchie before a big crowd. Hill of Beath ran Elgin close having led. Dunipace "bridge too far".

Any idea how much the losing clubs receive at this round?

At least four Tier 5 or under clubs through to the last 32. Not bad! That's at least 1 in 8 of the last 32.

R3 it's about £10,000.

R4 approximately £20,000.

I've always wondered - is it £20k in total for getting to R4? Or, do you get the R1, R2, R3 & R4 amounts accumulatively, meaning the £30k mentioned above plus the R1 & R2 amounts?

I’m no expert but I think it’s a singular payment based on the round you are eliminated.

Until recently it was cumulative. 

For the past couple of years it's the single payout based on the round knocked out.

I fancied a bit of a cup upset, so took in Hill O' Beath v Elgin. And I got close to seeing an upset.
The Haws surprised Elgin by making a quick start and took an early lead. Shot parried by keeper, and rebound turned in by Ryan Connelly. Elgin looked a bit startled and Haws tried to keep pressing high and to keep pressure on them, but Elgin gradually started to get more into the game, and a hit out of nothing from around 25 yards from Russell Dingwall made it 1-1. Really good strike. This knocked the stuffing out of Haws for a bit, but helped Elgin settle and start to look like the better side. Then with about half an hour played, the Elgin City main man was first to a loose ball and a good finish had Elgin 2-1 up.
2nd half began, and the Haws looked to start quickly like in the first to catch Elgin off guard. And it worked again. 5 minutes in and a forward pass saw Hill O Beath awarded a penalty as Mailer had his hands all over the home striker. Really silly and obvious. Clear penalty and red card as the last man. Maybe an argument that ball and striker were moving slightly away from the goal, so might not have been a clear goalscoring chance.
Ross Allum took the penalty. There seemed to be an age from setting up the penalty to the ref blowing for it to be taken. Don’t know if the wait unsettled the striker, but all power, no precision and the shot crashed off the bar.
And that settled the Elgin tactics for remainder of match. Goal up, man down, play the percentages. Sit in and look to hit on the break. And to be fair to Elgin, they did this wonderfully well. Haws had a lot of the ball, huffed and puffed lots, but Elgin quite comfortably kept them at arms length. Haws managed one good strike from distance, which the keeper got two fists on to punch well clear. Other than that, he never really had a save to make. The game was Attack v Defence, but Defence was comfortably breaking up every attack. Haws won a few corners, but with no real height in their team, they never threatened from them. Indeed, the only lad with any height for the home side tended to be out on the left swing crosses in, rather than in the box to get on the end of crosses... something that looked strange as it was obvious Elgin were easily dealing with every ball in.
Elgin subbed well, at brought on a couple of lads with pace. While they didn’t create much, they did carry the ball a couple of times which broke up the attacking momentum for Haws.
The pitch was awful, more like a swamp in places. Despite being the home team, the condition of it seemed to hamper Haws more than Elgin, especially as they tried to push for an equaliser as any move saw the ball and play slowed down by the pitch. 
Maybe the money from this run can be invested in a 4G surface? Would a 4G surface have helped them overrun a 10 man opponent? Or was the state of the pitch the leveller that saw them push a decent L2 side close?
Had the penalty gone in, who knows! But in the end, a professionally ground out win for Elgin who did just look to be a little better than the team two tiers below from the pyramid. 
An enjoyable game to watch, despite the state of the pitch and a really healthy crowd (circa 600?) which with the cup run money will have made a very healthy bank balance for Haws. Best of luck to Elgin in the next round.

What were your thoughts on the officials?

I thought they had a bad day at office, with some big decisions.

Was at the other end of the ground but I'm told haws equalizer looked onside.

Elgin no6 could have had another yellow at least twice.(probably why he was substituted)

Haws striker through on goal in second half looked onside by a distance.

Foul for penalty was outside box with player cleverly waiting till he was in box to go down.

Elgin goalkeeper clearly picked up ball outside box.

These could all have been game changing decisions.

Ross Draper. Scottish Cup winner with ICT in 2015. Superb at the back most weeks, saw him dominate against Bonnyrigg,  but usually subbed after an hour because his legs have gone. Really heavy pitch yesterday.

True, but I've seen cup ties like this for about 50 years. You make your own luck - with a bit of composure Allum would have scored the pen.  Just another auntie/baws scenario. Thought Elgin were quite comfortable considering they had 40 mins with 10 men. I think with 11 men, Hester would have picked them off on the break, he's a superb player at that level. Haws will have got some learning into them for next year though.

It's now a single big payment based on round of elimination:

Until a few seasons ago it was a series of small payments based on every round contested:

Scottish Cup prize money: How much will winner of Celtic vs Hearts get? | Football | Sport | Express.co.uk

e.g. if they lose in R4 then Linlithgow will have pocketed £20k this season. Go back to 2018-19 and they'd have trousered £2k + £2k + £4k + £6k + £9k = £23k.

So in their case the old system was actually slightly more generous. However if the Rose can land another win and then lose in R5 they'll be £12k better off than under the old system.

It's been done to 'salami slice' down the prize fund due to more clubs participating/failure to find a sponsor for several seasons/etc. It's also clear a particular boost was given to R5 and QFs.


Similarly whereas TV appearance fees from R4 on used to be £82k back when Sky was involved, they got reduced to £32k in 2017 and are now £24k. (R1-R3 fees have always been trifling):

Some modest top-ups of a few hundred £... representing radio and Youtube highlight fees... were also abolished around then.

I thought the officials were.... not used to such a tight ground! At one point the assistant spoke to ref on the mic to advise he couldn't see touchline properly due to too many subs!

Defo a few incorrect decisions... but while they could have been game changing I think the give you the old saying... it all balances out. Defo onside when running through in 2nd half... but as you say the penalty incident started outside the box (still a stupid thing for defender too do). That was Haws chance... and they never took it.
